buttons really a a big pain. : / I think people don't realize how important they are. Animation is usually my secret weapon What's your take on it?
One thing I would add to this is file size. ZOMG. On mishi paper's link page I ended up re-optimizing a lot of people's buttons. 32kb seems kinda small, but not on a page with lots of buttons it all adds up. >_< 8kb ftw.
I agreed with pretty much everything you said, except for fonts. I'd never use a font with serifs for a button. Sans serif always stands out a lot better in smaller sizes. But I guess it's a matter of judgment with the particular design your working with. ^^

Animation is useful, and can really help attract people to your button, but I suppose the file size is a problem... I'd completely forgotten about animation when I wrote this, so I suppose I should update it at some point XD
I can't say I have a specific file size which I try to adhere to when animating, I just go with how it feels - but I suppose the rule of thumb is to get it as low as possible, to decrease loading time. Too large, and an animation can have the reverse effect in the sense that no one will be able to see it because it hasn't loaded!
