Description
My card for this month's #ATC-Exchange , done for the VERY talented . She asked for either a picture of her character Nathaniel, her other character Scarletia, or a scene in the library where they spend most of their time... and I just couldn't decide, so I decided to put all three!I realize their outfits (particularly Scarletia's) aren't particularly on-model, but this month's theme was steampunk, so I thought I'd Victorian (yes, that's a verb now) up her dress some.
Thanks, ~sherega , for the great characters to work with. This was so much fun to do!
Ink and watercolor on bristol.

YES, for me it depends on what kind of paper but it tends to scan as light purple or cyan.
Of course, I could've just checked, but I'm lazy and tired. Seriously, you should get into the next exchange if you feel like you've got time, or do the weekly challenges. It's a lot of fun... I'm just sad that I haven't had the time for the weeklies lately.

Ah this is just lovely! I adooooore the lineart on this--your linework is excellent, and it shows so much energy! The colors and design are really nice too!

Ah, thank you! Normally my watercolors don't have linework this good-- I was actually acting on a tip from =ArmadaRyu , who told me that if you use those Sakura Micron pens, you can paint over them and the ink won't run! I was STOKED to find that out, because for years I've always assumed you have to color first, then put down the inked lines, but knowing that I can do it this way makes it so that I can work the same way I do in Photoshop. IT IS AWESOME.

Thank you thank you! All of ~sherega 's work looks like it's right out of a children's book, particularly her drawings of these characters, so I'm glad I could capture that some with this.

Thank you! I was getting a lot of inspiration from ~sherega 's work for the colors and general "look" of it all. I'm glad you like it... and honestly, the thing is so small it didn't take THAT much patience. If it were larger, it would've driven me batty!

Thank you! I assure you, it looks much better in person-- ATCs are really cool because they're so small in real life, and I've never seen one on-screen that didn't look even cooler as an actual physical object.

Nice use of watercolors! Do you use water color pencils or paints? I can never get watercolors to behave. lol.

temiel In reply to rooster82 [2010-03-25 11:02:29 +0000 UTC]
In this case, it's paint-- I usually use paint. The trick is using very little water-- a little goes a long way, and using just a small amount gives you a lot more control with the brush.
But let's just say that if this were a larger piece, I would've had very little patience for minuscule detail with watercolors. IT IS A PAIN. >_<

I just wanted to say again, now that I looked at it more..it doesn't look your typical drawings. The faces look different, maybe because they are kids? I dont know. It's still good, non the less!

temiel In reply to TheDevilsBlush [2010-03-25 04:02:05 +0000 UTC]
Yes, partially it's because they're kids; partially it's because I was getting inspiration from ~sherega 's very simplified way of drawing faces; and partially it's because in real life each face is no bigger than 3/8 of an inch.

Lol, I love *Sighter 's comments, sometimes they sound like they come from the depths of a zombie-addled fever dream (and somehow, I imagine he wouldn't mind my describing them that way ).
I'm glad you like it, thanks much! In real life, this is actually VERY small, only 2.5x3.5 inches, so it doesn't take a lot of patience to fill the space the way it would in a larger work. I love working really small sometimes, you get to try out compositions that just wouldn't work out if the picture were larger.

I should just comment more often anyway. Its the best way to give back to the community.

Oh, thanks so much! I hope ~sherega likes it. I don't even know what story I was thinking of when I came up with this, but all the pieces seemed to click. As to the detail-- this looks MUCH better in person, because then you can see how small everything is. I'm really pleased with this one. If she wants me to mail it to her, it's going to be a shame seeing it go.

You could always make a copy of it and send her the print and keep the original
I love to see things in person more than I do online because you lose so much detail and everything when pictures are scanned in. I know personally my scanner EATS my colored penciling up like its nobodies business!
To bad we can't all live together in a giant art community where we can watch each other draw and grow from how talented everyone is

temiel In reply to PhantasmMarquesses [2010-03-25 03:05:23 +0000 UTC]
Argh, don't even get me STARTED on how badly my scanner treats colored pencils. It takes me SO long to get the colors back to the way they looked when I drew it...
Alas, I can't send her a print-- the whole goal of making ATCs is to trade originals. That's why we do them on traditional media, so the recipients can all get a unique piece of original art. :3

Awesome job! It's so tiny and colorful, like something out of a kid's book. I love their little outfits. And I love the watercolors, you're really good with them. Kudos for managing to fit two characters AND a background onto a ATC. That's impressive. I'm sure ~sherega will love it!

Aw, thank you! I'm glad you like it. I was inspired so much by her style while I was doing this, she has a GREAT grasp on character design, watercolor and traditional media. If you don't know her work, you should check it out.
And yeah, I love single-character-portrait-format ATCs, but I wanted to try something a little more ambitious this time just to see if I could do it. Being in this group has really opened my eyes to what people can do at this size, so I figured I didn't need to limit myself if I wanted to do more than the one character.

Her style is really cute! I'd looked at her gallery before, but I hadn't really noticed any of her works with people in it. I'd just sorta skimmed through it. I think you did a good job of nodding your hat to her style.
And yeah, I'm just discovering the challenge of working at that size. I've had ATCs for a while now but I'd never really used them much and have just recently rediscovered just how tiny they are. Especially since I tend to like a bit of detail to my line art so I'm still getting a bit used to them. AND working with traditional media. I've dabbled here and there but I'm not really familiar with any of the traditional styles. Which is a large part of why I joined the group. Step outside my comfort zone and all that.
