Description
My card for this month's #ATC-Exchange , done for the VERY talented . She asked for either a picture of her character Nathaniel, her other character Scarletia, or a scene in the library where they spend most of their time... and I just couldn't decide, so I decided to put all three!I realize their outfits (particularly Scarletia's) aren't particularly on-model, but this month's theme was steampunk, so I thought I'd Victorian (yes, that's a verb now) up her dress some.
Thanks, ~sherega , for the great characters to work with. This was so much fun to do!
Ink and watercolor on bristol.

Thanks so much! The style of this owes a lot to ~sherega 's art, which I just love.

Thank you! I was very pleased with the skirt. All except for the bustle, it's based on ~sherega 's original design for this character, which was a joy to work from.

THANK YOU!!! I'm so glad you like it, I was really proud of this. It looks much nicer in real life, but alas, I just mailed it to the person I made it for so I'll never see it again.

Oh my goodness. I am AMAZED by how much patience and skill you must have to fit so much onto SUCH a small card o__o
The outfits are beautifully done! Excellent work my dear

Afff, thank youuuu~! I'm so glad you like it! I think it looks much better in real life, isn't it wonderful making something so eensy?
I love it, anyway, but then I have a huge thing for miniature stuff. XD

I love the detail here, even though the picture is simplistic you've somehow managed to get a lot of detail in with the use o very subtle lines. This picture has a lot of depth and personality, and it's really pretty! Nice stuff

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it, I worked quite hard on this one. I definitely think it's one of my best ATCs, and it's even nicer in real life.
The texture doesn't show up nearly so much on the actual card-- I hate how badly my scanner butchered this.

Oh! This is just great! I love Scarletia's new shirt and the softness of the colours. (She even has the "antennas" so characteristic to her mother's side of inheritance xD) I'm amazed you ended up picturing down all the options I listed. The details from the books to the ink pen in Nathaniel's hand and the borders with the cogwheels are beautiful. My favourite book is the with a bookmark. As if it is showing it's tongue. : )
I'm glad you found it fun to draw them. Personally I'm really delighted how you took your artistic freedom and modified their clothing so don't worry about it at all. Those shoes actually fit for Scarletia and that blue "skirt" (don't know how to translate)could very well be one of her experiments on the field of dressmaking.
(Poor Nathaniel. He seems like worrying whether to prepare for fast escape or to turn to as hardly noticeable as possible when he's sitting so tightly on his place. n___n")
Thank you very much! <3

Oh, fantastic! I was so worried you wouldn't like it, I know these guys are your babies so I tried to do them justice. I LOVED Scarletia's antennae, I just had to put them in.
I'm glad the clothes suit her and that the blue bustle isn't too much... well, blue, since I know she likes red.
You're very welcome, and again, I'm so glad you like it!! If you want me to send this to you, be sure to send me a note with your address and I can get it sent right out on Monday.

aww. You wouldn't have to worry about it! In any case, most of my characters are quite free-spirited already by their nature and some new and different on them only makes them that very justice. n____n Ophiopogon maybe is strict what comes to his clothing but his infamous apprentice is almost the opposite - as well as his niece, too. That blue bustle looks nice and ads the detail and certain amusement to her overall dress that is only typical for her.
So no need to worry at all! I'm very much liking it. The whole card is just adorable and I admire the effort you put on it. The borders are a great touch. : ) And as I already noted, it would be lovely to receive it as a real.

Yay! I think you'll like the real-life one, it looks MUCH better than the scan. It's definitely one of my favorite cards I've made, so it's going to be a little sad to see it go... but then, I did make it knowing I'd probably be sending it to you, so I can't be TOO sad about it.

Oh, perfect! I was hoping you would, because sometimes my mail service is a bit spotty. Generally I have no problems when I send stuff out, but receiving stuff... I was waiting on an envelope from Britain for over a month once!
And even closer to home, Canada is only a few hours away driving and it took TWO WEEKS for an envelope from there to get to my house. And it's not even like we're living in the middle of nowhere, it's the Boston metro area!!
Sorry for the rant! I just get very irritated with our less-than-awesome mail service. Fortunately I'm moving soon, and I grew up in the city where we're going, so I know the mail there is quick and efficient. :3

o____o I know the feeling. In January send a present for a person living in Russia (not that far away but different postal services, at least : P) and I'm still not exactly sure if she has received it by now. And it was meant to be flight-mail. -____-" (*tsik* Slow aeroplane.)
: D After moving you'll even get your post! Good service in there. In Finland the post is usually quite quick too, so after the card has landed within the borders it should be in my post box quite quickly. If our post just doesn't lose it (<- the classical one).
And I don't usually feel stressed over someone ranting on real thing. n___n Let's just hope it gets safely here.

Considering the tiny size of ATCs you've done an excellent job - two full length figures! I'm finding it hard enough to draw a torso in the space allowed. The books is a really smart bg to use as it allows for details whilst still being completely controllable.

temiel In reply to Larissa-Bright [2010-03-26 12:45:12 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it was a fun little challenge to fit that much stuff onto one! Originally my idea involved more of the library beyond just the shelves with the books, but I figured that not only would it be a giant pain in the butt to do, it would also look a little too cramped. Shelves with books are relatively easy, especially this size.

Oh, I think you have as much going on here as you need - it's well balanced. Gosh, I need to get a move on with my ATC - I can't even pick up a pencil at the moment I'm so blocked! O_o

temiel In reply to Larissa-Bright [2010-03-26 14:39:00 +0000 UTC]
You know, I've found with these it doesn't really matter if you have an idea in your head already-- just put the pencil down and see what comes out. The small size, I think, makes it very forgiving if you don't quite know what to do at first.

Larissa-Bright In reply to temiel [2010-03-26 14:44:46 +0000 UTC]
I know what I WANT to do - the idea and everything is sorted - but I can't seem to make the pencil do anything remotely acceptable. The term is epic fail, I think!

Thank you! I loved doing something more complicated in such a small space, it was a fun challenge. The great thing about small media is that it's very forgiving a lot of the time. I borrowed a lot of the color scheme from ~sherega 's work, so much of it has a great "vintage" look to it that I was hoping to replicate.

Thank youuuuu!! I think it does look better in person, scanners do such awful things to traditional media!
I love ATCs because they always look better in real life, they seem like little perfect pieces of art. Scanning them annoys me because it makes the whole thing bigger and magnifies all the flaws.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lumaris In reply to temiel [2010-03-25 16:52:13 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's one of the reasons I haven't scanned any of my traditional colored art, save for a few here and there (and they all look horrible compared to the original.) But on ATCs, I totally agree with how perfect they appear in person compared to being blown up by the scanner. But this one's not horrible - I didn't mean to imply it if I did ^^, I just meant that with all that detail, the real thing must look even more amazing
it also gives a real story book feeling to it, now that I think about it.
No problem! It makes me want to work on more ATCs

temiel In reply to Lumaris [2010-03-25 16:59:20 +0000 UTC]
Oh, no, I didn't think you meant that at all, I was just griping about how badly scans treat traditional pieces. God help you if you're trying to scan something done in colored pencil...
AND YOU TOTALLY SHOULD. I forget, are you a member of #ATC-Exchange ?

Lumaris In reply to temiel [2010-03-25 17:20:20 +0000 UTC]
Oh good, I was a bit afraid. XD I've never scanned anything in colored pencils, but I can only imagine. My scanner has the acute ability to turn anything a slight shade of purple. >.<
Yup! I actually joined earlier this month, when I first learned about ATC's.
