Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water are very special people. Each one has the capability to awaken the true power of their elements, something no one else can do. Once trained, each character becomes the Master of their element, and usually cannot be beaten by their own element from an opponent. (ex: If Fire fought a fire-type Dinaurian, Fire would most likely win.) However, having this power comes at a cost. Each of the four was born many years ago, during the reign of Dynal the First. Dynal I had called upon the Gods to give him the elemental strength he needed to defeat his brother, Z, and Ark Ra responded by creating five rings: Fire, Earth, Air, Water, and Neutral. From then on, each and every person on the planet could wield one of the five elements. The first ones to gain this ability were known as the Chosen Five, and were birthed in order to teach the people to use their newfound abilities. In short, they traveled the world, acting as teachers to those who knew no control over their skills. When Dynal I passed away, the Five Chosen took the rings as their own and swore to protect the power within them. Fire, Earth, Wind, and Water fled to the far corners of the world and built special shrines that only allowed a select few to pass, and only by completing special trials would the intruder be allowed to visit the Chosen. Neutral, however, fled to the center of the earth, where he swore to keep balance among light and darkness, believing neutrality to be the key.
The Chosen, however, were not immortal. They can die just like any other being, and when one dies, they all die. They are, though, reborn' like a phoenix, as soon as they die, the get rebirthed as the new Chosen, and thus can live forever. When reborn, they still have to grow up from a young age, but retain minimal knowledge of their past lives. They are born knowing who they are and what their role in life is, though personalities do not always carry on to the next generation, nor do appearances.
There are many attributes that define a Chosen. For one, they all sense each other's feelings, like a 5-way radio. If Wind was angry, for example, Water could feel it- however, after practice, they can each manage to keep a hold over what they themselves are feelings and only notice their comrades' emotions.
Another major factor is that each Chosen cannot bear children. They may still love and date, but cannot ever have children of their own, and relationships usually don't work out well for the constant risk of dying along with a comrade or all of the secrecy and power involved in being Chosen.
In Time of Death, the Chosen each still wield the ring of their ancestors. It's these rings that both Z and Dynash are after, but in order to obtain the rings for themselves, they must pass three trials of the Chosen's desire. The last of each of these trials is always a one-on-one fight between the Chosen and their opponent. The Chosen doesn't have to fight to the death, but can choose when the fight is over, and if the opponent is worthy of the power. The chosen in Time of Death are the five whose references I'm posting (Four of which were adopted from ~RandomInvader , Neutral will be created by me.)
