Description
Alternate Ending of the Season 2 episode, “The Deerfox.”
Warning: The following story is not meant to be a warm-fuzzy as you can probably tell from the image. However, there are no descriptions of violence in the story and it does have a bittersweet ending.
Also, apologies for the woff outline in the image, sorry.
“This… got steep fast,” Hilda gasped as she and Johanna climbed up the ravine wall.
“You’re not worn out are you,” Johanna asked with a smirk, “c’mon, race you to the top!”
Hilda, not being one to turn down a challenge, played along and continued ascending. The blue-haired girl concentrated deeply as she lifted herself up as quickly as her arms could allow.
“Not worn out are you,” Hilda shot back once she heard Johanna’s movements cease.
“Mum,” she inquired once more as she looked in her direction. Johanna had an expression on her face that was a firm mix between worry and seriousness.
“Keep climbing Hilda,” Johanna spoke in a hushed tone as she stared to the right of her daughter.
“Just don’t look to your right.” Hilda failed to comply as her innocent curiosity compelled her to glance over. What she saw next caused her entire stomach to turn frigid. A red wolf twice her size was peering at the young girl with sulfurous eyes on a nearby ledge. Of course, an animal lover such as Hilda was well aware of what red-breed wolves were capable of.
“Um, Mum,” Hilda spoke as her voice became shaky and the pit feeling in her stomach grew into an overwhelming urge to vomit.
“It’s okay,” her mother assured in a calm and controlled manner, “just watch your foot and slowly step away.” But it was of no use, the mere presence of the wolf and its enclosing movements on Hilda caused her entire body to lose rational thought. Her heart had an alarming pace as it thundered inside her rib cage, her mouth became completely dry, and all other thoughts in her mind were instantly distinguished. Now, she would do anything to survive.
“Hilda please,” Johanna said as her voice was now becoming uneasy. But it was of no use, fear completely took over the young girl as she screamed in terror and climbed up the wall as fast as she could imagine. The red wolf attempted to snatch the adventurer as she climbed up and did not hesitate to pursue its prey.
“Hilda,” Johanna yelled as she was powerless to stop what was happening in front of her own eyes. One thing was for certain, she was not going to lose her daughter on this day. The single mother did everything she could to climb up the ravine wall, but unfortunately failed to as the rocks crumbled underneath her feet, causing her to fall. Fortunately, she was able to grab a hold of a tree branch sticking out. Johanna clung to the tree branch with all her effort and pulled herself to safety. However, she was in no condition to feel safe. She continually called out her daughter’s name, hoping she would have been able to outrun the wolf and safely return to her. The single mother curled up and began to weep, just days earlier she was worrying if she had been too harsh about grounding Hilda, now, she never knew if she would ever be able to see or talk to her only child ever again.

Once Hilda reached the top of the ravine, she wasted no time and ran as fast as she could into the forest. The adrenaline rushing through her veins allowed her to sprint past the trees and shrubbery. Unfortunately, the red wolf was relentless and gained speed on the blue-haired girl, causing her to scream at the top of her lungs as she tried to out maneuver the predator. The red wolf tried again to trap the adventurer in its maw, but only succeeded in grabbing one of her boots. At this point Hilda was panicking beyond what was reasonable, she no longer cared or even thought about anything else, at this point, she wasn’t convinced that she would be able to see another day of her own life. The adventurer attempted to evade the predator by running through a hollow log on the ground, but the red wolf blocked the blue-haired girl off by running to the other end. Hilda screamed again in response, at this point her throat felt raw and torn, but she had no time to acknowledge this, instead she ran through the forest yet again, hoping the wolf would either lose interest or be unable to catch up with her.
“Please! Someone! Anyone,” Hilda screamed in practical horror as tears fell down her eyes. She continued to run but could hear the growling of the red wolf getting louder and louder. Soon enough, the adventurer felt a great weight hit her, as if a dumbbell fell on her, slamming her down to the ground.
~~~~~~
Twig’s ears shot up in alarm as he heard a strange noise echo across the forest, with no time to waste, he ran diligently through the forest, which was now being blanketed by the setting sun. The approach of winter brought back the usual coldness that Twig was so fond of, but this was no moment to be enjoying himself. After several minutes of running, the deer fox made it to a large open area of the forest, where he saw a familiar face. The red wolf which was tirelessly pursuing the deerfox during his entire journey was scavenging through the shrubbery. Upon seeing the predator, Twig remained still and slowly backed into the bushes, being careful as to not make the slightest sound. The red wolf clearly wasn’t aware of the deerfox’s presence as it simply made an odd noise with its head in the bush before turning around and quickly walking away.
Once Twig was certain the coast was clear, he very cautiously walked out of his hiding place and approached the bushes the predator was suspiciously interested in. As he was approaching the bushes, he caught the smell of a scent he knew very well, the smell of his owner. Upon realizing this, the young deerfox’s tail and ears dropped as an aura of dread befell over the innocent creature. Twig knew that this could only mean one thing. He walked through the bushes, and sure enough, he was met with a sight that broke his tender heart.
Hilda, the human that Twig knew since he was very young, laid on the ground of the forest, and it was no mystery what happened to her. Twig froze in place, letting time around him pass as he comprehended the tragedy that was before him. Quite some time passed before Twig moved again, this time running up to his owner all while whimpering in distress and desolation. Surprisingly, the deerfox wept, human-like tears fell from his eyes as he gently licked the limp hand of Hilda. The sorrow of the mystical creature created silence in the forest, all creatures in the trees and round about ceased their nightly calls and commotions. For once, all was truly silent in the wilderness as a deerfox mourned the loss of a friend. While the sorrow penetrated the soul of the deerfox, it created peace and stillness in the forest. Finally, Twig broke the silence as he raised his head and let out a peaceful howl as a large tear fell from one of his eyes and onto the forest ground.
Twig then saw a bright white light shine from the place where his tear fell, causing the deerfox to step back. Despite the unexpected situation, the deerfox was oddly at peace as a sense of comfort fell over him. The white light swelled and shined as brightly as the sun before fading, revealing the outlines of two familiar figures. Twig’s tail and ears shot up as he saw his mother and father standing in front of him. It had been so long since the young deerfox had seen his parents and joy seeped into his heart as he was reunited with them. Twig ran up to his mother as she lowered her head to bond with her son, all the while his father approached Hilda’s body. Twig whimpered in communication as he mysteriously explained what had happened. The great stag listened to what his son had to say before lowering his head in the same manner as Twig’s mother. Twig himself stood by and watched in curiosity as his father licked his son’s companion on the forehead. For a few seconds, nothing happened, but out of thin air. A luminescent figure raised from the body and took on a familiar shape. Twig realized what this was, it was for certain not a ghost, but rather a spirit. The spirit of a friend.
“Hello Twig,” Hilda said warmly as she smiled from above.
I hope this story wasn’t too sad, sorry if it wasn’t that good. I also don’t know if I should give this a mature tag, please tell me if you think it does need one.
Feedback and constructive criticism will be appreciated.
Hilda and its characters belong to Luke Pearson, I own nothing.
