adoptables are character designs that you can buy from other artists. When you own a character, that you either made yourself or bought as an adoptable, you can draw pictures of them or buy pictures of them from other artists (called commissions). you can also write stories for them, dress them up, and lots of other fun things. You buy adopts with real money, or dA points, or offer art or other characters to trade for the designs depending on how they are being sold. The idea is to gather up alot of character designs that you like and invest in them by gathering artwork of them. Just because its fun : ) its like having a collection of fun interesting characters. If you get bored of the character you can trade it for another one that you like better, and the more you have invested in them the more they are worth in trade. Very few artists will allow you to resell their adoptables. Its good to read and follow the rules set by adoptable creators. The Adoptable market is a big part of the community on Deviantart and on alot of other art websites like Toyhouse or Gaia. Its a fun, community activity that can be profitable for creators, if theyre designs are popular. There are also closed species adopts which work as a sort of elite club, where the creator makes up a species and sells designs of characters that are a part of the species. as an owner of a closed species adopt you can be a part of the species group and make friends and join in group activities. There is alot of fun to be had with adoptables, but its not for everyone. Personally, i like it alot ^^
