Description
Note: I'm using painttool SAI. If you're a photoshop user, then maybe all this doesn't work. But you can get Painttool SAI for free. I didHere's a description for the frames:
Frame 1: Do a simple sketch of you're going to color ( for example Toothless.)
frame 2: Create a new linework layer and make a lineart for the picture just like I did. when you're done you can delete the sketch if you like.
Frame 3: Create another layer and place under the lineart layer. Now fill the whole picture with a color you like Toothless to have. I choose a dark blue color. then click the ''magic wand''. It's a little to the right above the pencil. mark all the colors OUTSIDE the lineart and delete It. Only toothless should now be colored like the picture above. Also, the arrow above toothless shows you where the light is coming from.
Frame 4: Now make shadows. The red markings on Toothless above shows where It should be shadows because the light is from above. You can also choose a color for the eyes if you like
Frame 5: Now I choose the dark blue color that I gave Toothless skin and I make It lighter. I should now have a nice light blue color to paint with. Put this color where you want the lightning. I you know how toothless's head is formed, then It shouldn't be too hard. If the color's not bright enough, then just make It brighter.
Frame 6: Now you can add some more details like eye shadows, reptile skin and more if you like.
Now you're done!
My next tutorial will be about Toothless eyes.
Edit: This tutorial is very old x3 I use different techniques today, but this still works and is a very useful and easy shading/coloring tutorial especially for beginners

Hmm...Not sure which tool is the magic tool in Gimp though
I would use paint tool SAI instead...But I'm already mostly used to Gimp and it's interface. And I don't think it has a path tool like Gimp, which I really need since I don't have a tablet :/
