You can use this on Photoshop with "sphere filter". I don't use 3D options. I don't know the problem...

If you use this on a 3D sphere, the right and left sides will meet and form a visible seam. Also, the top and bottom edges will pinch together. But it's ok. Like you said, it can be used for 2D work easily and it can be modified for 3D work with Photoshop. A lot of people don't know how to do that though. My friend really liked it but thought he couldn't use it as a 3D texture, but I showed him how.
