I adore how the entire internet has been mashing up Metal Gear Solid and Undertale (or in this case, MGS art style and Undertale), even though they share very little in common. As a fan of both, all the combinations and jokes are hilarious. and epic.

Like you said, even though the games (especially MGSV) share some concepts and elements with Undertale, it's still very unexpected and hilarious.
I guess people enjoy seeing weird combinations, especially if they work nicely.
My reason for combining the art style with Undertale is mainly because the simplistic style of the game leaves room for interpretation and personal stylization.
And also the skeletons kinda remind me of Skull Face. So yeah.

Part of me wonders if the reason for all the crossing over is just the fact that both were released in a relatively close timespan (so people have both on the mind), or it's all evolved from Undertale stealing MGSV's thunder and people running with that.

I didn't even put that together when Flowy and Asriel were using The Gasterblaster that it had Gasters name in it. I feel so stupid. For a guy that was erased from history he seems almost like the secret villain of this whole thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Sans learned his tricks from Gaster. His freaky knowledge of the future and past, his teleporting probably even more.

There are 4 instances of this kind of skull/face, and 3 of them are related to final bosses of each route of the game.
So I'm guessing there will be a fourth and final route where you face Gaster in some way.
My theory is that Gaster's existence is spread across all the different timelines (every possible kind of playthrough where you occurrences relating to Gaster) and once all those instances are "fused", Gaster finally appears in full form.

Well to be honest, I used Skull Face as a reference to get that "messed-up face that resembles a skull" feeling to Gaster.
