Obviously knowing in advance that you are designing a character that you plan to animate...do you purposely elliminate details that will make it easier to animate or do you have an image in your head of the character and animate it no matter how complicated the design?

I design my characters depending on what I'm gonna be using them for. Comics are all out, and as detailed as I wanna be. For animation I try to keep the line count down, and minimize the colours
If a character is from a comic Idea -or etc.- I sometimes have to streamline the design by tossing what's not necessary and keeping the basic details.
Example: [link]
If I were going to animate her I would take out the smaller belt, tightened the chaps, loose the shoulder patches, knuckle holes in the gloves, and the guns (Sig GSR 1911's) would look the same but not as detailed.

Hope that helps.
