Is carrara a must have? Everyone seems to be using it. And how much does it cost? I may want to get it eventually.

You can get the standard version for $250, and the pro for $550. Every now and then they'll have a sale for a lot less. As for modeling, people have mixed feelings, but I would say it's worth the money for it's ease of use and ability. I use the standard version, by the way.
