The Altus Type Starbase was designed by engineers from the Ardana Colonial Corporation and Core Orbital systems. Stations of this type functioned as port towns on major space lanes.

Altus type stations relied on complex interactions between artificial gravity and centrifugal forces to keep everything from floating. In contrast to the deck structure of most Starfleet run stations, different sections of the station operated on different gravitational fields. The outer rings relied on rotation created by the station's impulse engines to rotate and generate artificial gravity, while the pylons and the central tower used gravity generators.
The station's hull was comprised of a smart metal alloy that could be programmed to do various things including mimic the properties of glass.
Various areas of the station were accessible by a rapid transit system
