Description
Honbetsu Prime, the third planet in the Honbetsu System, is a visually beautiful, ringed world, 24.39 light years from NGC 2264 and 2,200 light years from the Sol System, and is home to a species of extremely early, stone age, almost metallic reptilians. The locals, called the Cykrethi, use stone tools and weapons, and do not understand fire. They do not have a method of recording language, and barely have a rudimentary form of speech -- their most used phrase for communication being grunting and screaming, and their most commonly used mode of non-verbal communication being either effectively spitting at each other or waving their reproductive organs at each other. The planet's flora is largely unique in that it is a disorienting purple in color, and directly requires large contents of salt and water, meaning the local flora overwhelmingly is coastal and nature. The surface is covered by writhing, carnivorous jungles, and dust-like inland wastes. The local fauna is extremely grotesque to Human observers -- an overwhelming majority of species are carnivorous as it's much more dangerous to try and eat the local flora, and many invert, through a chemical and physical process, their prey while living in order to consume their soft insides.Located in the Orion Arm, it is believed to have been visited by ancient Humans, however, its existence seems to have eventually been forgotten. Multiple small abandoned pirate settlements and camps are scattered about the inland deserts on Honbetsu Prime, indicating a long history as a rest-stop for travelers, smugglers, and illegals. The planet was discovered by the FNSS Zaslare in 8735. It was cataloged and generally disregarded due to its hazardous surface conditions. 6 years later, by chance, Isaac Nadelmann, Supreme Leader of the Federation at the time, happened upon documents and images regarding multiple worlds, particularly Honbetsu Prime; he became, almost unhealthy, attracted to the planet and its indigenous life. Supreme Leader Nadelmann, a well-known advocate for ecological welfare, personally declared Honbetsu Prime a xenological preservation.
The planet hosts several scientific installations in orbit, on the surface, and in the seas, affiliated with the Federation of National Socialist Republics, which study the ecosystem and local inhabitants as they develop. Little progress, however, has been noted in the five thousand years since the planet's discovery, other than several highly localized but failed attempts at domestication of a local wolf-like reptilian species.
First recorded in 8802, and repeating with an interval of 86 standard years, an immensely powerful radio signal bursts out from the coordinates of latitude 65.95, and longitude 137.11 -- the middle of the central disaster of the planet's second largest continent -- into space. This radio signal -- seemingly nothing but white noise -- emits from an unknown source. In 9066, the Federation scientists Nathan Sinaga, Lydia Rausch, and Godiva Brocco organized an expedition consisting of 500 members to pinpoint and determine the location of the mysterious radio emissions, over two centuries after it was first recorded. The team, setting out from one of the planet's orbital stations on a planetary science shuttle, disappeared within a week of the beginning of their search. The rescuers who entered the area also vanished, and sensors showed no sign of the shuttle anywhere on the planet. In 9224, a second expedition, organized by Dr. Abaco De Santi, the vanished Godiva Brocco's great-great-great-great-grandchild, consisting of over 5,000, entered the region by use of multiple shuttles -- all disappeared within seconds of one another. The region has since been restricted by the Federation government, however -- untold numbers of unnamed, forgotten would-be adventurers have surely vanished in the area, long before the disappearance of the two expeditions, and their attempted rescuers.
