From the doorway, Sand looked out across the forest fl oor
and saw Lasertooth and Thunderclap. They had just fi nished
eating a meal and were now lying flat on their bellies, small
bursts of sunlight burning through the forest canopy and
shining on their backs.

“Time to rise, my friends,” stated Sand. “We must return
to Genova at once. The Commander has likely gone on without
us.”

The pair stirred slowly but got to their feet and stretched
their wings and waved their tails slightly. Rail sent the two
rangers away with orders. Sand turned and offered Thunderclap as a mount for the ranger leader.

“No thank you,” Rail replied. “I will be bringing some
of my rangers along with us and we have our own mounts.
There are few left in these forests, but the forest griffons are
loyal to us yet. We will be ready to depart in a few moments.
If you’ll excuse me then, I shall return momentarily.”
