Description
Another poorly drawn picture of a race from my unnamed fantasy setting. When the Sectoids are born (or hatch, haven’t decided yet) they resemble humans, except for their pale blue or green skin, quadrupedal stance, and their simian level of intelligence. The “larval” sectilians feed primarily on a diet of insects, arachnids, myriapods, and even crustaceans if they live close to an ocean, supplemented with the occasional fruit or small mammal, bird, or reptile. Arthropods are still however and essential part of both their diet and development, as they cannot mature without the DNA gained from their arthropod based diet. “Larval” Sectoids store the generic information from arthropods in a brain-like gland inside their gut-area where genetic information is kept from birth to pupation, where the sectoid child increases its mass in a very small amount of time before solidifying its skin into a shell-like structure and partially digesting its insides so it can build a new body over the course of a year. After a year, however, the pupa will hatch into an adolescent Sectoid; a fully cognizant being combining both humanoid and arthropoid traits into one functional form. Sectoids vary in bugginess, which is determined by their childhood diet based on both what types of arthropods they ate and in what amount, meaning that Sectoids can range from near-hominid to mostly arthropod.Related content

I wonder what would happen if they didn't have any arthropods to eat - would they simply not mature, or would they metamorphose into a completely humanoid form?

If they don’t eat enough arthropods then they die in their pupation stage, they literally just can not function as adults without any arthropod DNA.

Hm, they better hope their reliance on a single food type won't prove their undoing. Such crippling specialization has doomed many a species in the past.
