Several years after being cursed as a beast, losing his family and having the throne usurped, Dieter has been living-more like existed- in exile in the neighboring country of Hwang. Chun-Hei, the queen of the country and his surrogate sister, has kept his presence a secret due to Achim(Asmodeus) attempts to find him and kill him.

Dieter was falsely informed Anna was executed along with her father and Dieter's plans to care for Anna as he vowed to her father, his best friend, Mathias were gone.
However, several years later, Dieter learns she is alive, and had been sentenced to slavery in the mines when her father was executed for "treason" against the new(false) king when Achim(Asmodeus) took the throne.

She had only been 8, but now at age 16, she was to be executed for reasons not told. Her execution was to be held in the city of the other kingdom. (Dieter's former ruled kingdom)
Despite Chun-Hei oppositions of Dieter's venture to his kingdom and rescuing Anna, plus the offer of sending her best spies for the rescue, Dieter knew he was really the only one capable of this. He knew the terrain, direction of roads, and how to battle-and if necessary kill- any solider of Achim's, as Achim's reign seemed to a hellish repeat of the reign of Asmodeus he knew as a boy.

Even entering a inch on the border of Achim's kingdom(really Dieter's, but you get the idea of usurpation) placed his life in peril, but he discarded all the fear of being and sought to find Anna.

After a week's pursuit, he found her, locked in a prison wagon with four soldiers as guards, some miles just before reaching the city. Having mauled the guards-mostly in defense, but also to free Anna, Dieter escaped with her to Hwang. However, within two days of Anna's liberation, it was obvious news of that reached Achim as soldiers relentlessly tried to hunt them down.

Anna did not fully trust Dieter, as he never told her his real name or what his true purpose for rescuing her, and the fact he was a fearsome beast did little assuage her trust in him either.
However, after a second attempt to run away from him as they made their way to reach the border of Hwang, she realized he was to be trusted as she understood he would protect her at all costs.

Their most recent skirmish from Achim's soldiers-and a few bounty hunters after both Anna and Dieter had left Anna with her side grazed by a bullet, but they eluded their pursuers.
But three days passed, and while they sought to avoid any towns or villages, Dieter knew well from how Anna was becoming weaker and her wound was infected, he saw he had no other choice than to take Anna to the nearest city in Hwang.
Prior to this, she made him promise her that they would never see or be near any other humans because Anna had grown to hate people over the eight years of her slavery. Having experienced the very same life when he too had been her age, Dieter had agreed, but he knew sooner or later, she would have to be among people. As many as there are evil and cruel, there are good people as well, and one has to keep living no matter what. But he wanted to do this gradually, so she slowly regain trust in people, however with her wound, he was compelled to thrust her in with people.

He did not tell her this, but as they neared the nearest city, Anna sensed what he was doing. She flew in a blind, frantic rage, even hitting and biting him and denounced him as being no better than humans. While he could very well easily restrained her, he did not want to take the chance of harming him, and tried to reason with her, yet she grew more wild about it and finally threw a rock at his head and knocked him out while she ran off.

By the time he came to, she had ran off a mile or so, and he scrambled to find her, tracking her down by scent-he is a lupine creature after all- and by the random trail of blood he spotted in the forest.
Anna ran, though she had no idea where to. She was captured by the soldiers and the bounty hunters, and despite her struggle, a scrawny injured girl is really no match against a dozen or more men trained to kill.
They intended to use her as bait so to speak, in the expectations of capturing Dieter as well, for a double bounty-and for the soldiers, a promotion. Some of the bounty hunters, being of a more vulgar, base nature than the starched, soulless soldiers, decided to have their way with Anna while they waited.
Anna fought and struggled as long as she could, but after a few punches to the face, they nearly overpowered her and she thought she was in for hell until she heard a crash and a thud and saw the three bounty hunters slashed and tossed aside off of her like rag dolls.
Within a second, she herself was grabbed like a rag doll, and she finally saw it was Dieter who had saved her. She was stunned, as she though after her actions, he wold have certainly abandoned her.
But she realized then he never would.
