I guess is not a casual encounter...

Great pic!

No, not casual encounter. I stopped the car suddenly when doing 85mph and jumped out with my camera and proceeded to chased the poor thing all over the highway.

we don't get them here - and I've always wanted one as a pet. They bite - but are they poisonous?

Cheers
Robyn

No, not poisonious. Many people do actually have them as pets. Low maintenance I would think. Outstanding work in your gallery by the way. You work is inspirational.

thank you - I really appreciate comments like that. I'm my own worst critic, so it helps when people keep me going

what species?

I don't know my Tarantula's that well. I do know she is female. The males are black. Notice she has her 'tail' (not the correct scientific term) up - a defensive posture.

I'd beg to differ, haha! I do believe those are hooks on his front legs I see.. the sign of a mature male. He looks like an Aphonopelma of sorts. We used to see them all the time down in TX when we went down there for our ATS expos.

male and female tarantulas have different colorization, but not like "males black, females white"

also the corrent scientific term is "abdomen" or "ophistosoma". this is not a defensive posture. Tarantula's "1st pair of legs up" posture is the defensive posture, not this one.

btw, nice photo there!

Thanks for the info. I was going by the way "she" always raised her abdomen whenever my hand was near. Thanks!

I pretty certain this is Brachypelma albiceps (not B. albopilosum - that is the Honduran Curly Hair).
Although raised front legs is a defensive stance, raising the abdomen is also common in 'hair' flicking species such as those in the genus Brachypelma. Also I suspect the spider may be male as it looks very leggy for a female. Males are not plain black btw - they still have the pale carapace.
There's a picture here - [link]
I have seen this species for sale in the UK and we nearly bought a juvenile last month.
sorry to seem so argumentative. Beautiful tarantula and I love the photo! It's an brilliant shot and great angle.

Thank you for the info. Dozens were crossing the far west Texas highway that early October morning. Most were this coloring though a few were different markings and larger.

she's mean looking ;_; so strange compared to my docile baby.

i'd be scared to get near her.

Oh dear.
As fascinating as spiders are, they freak me out to the EXTREME if they're
a) on me
b) in my house
c) surprize attacking

But what a fantastic shot. I can't believe how close you got- kudos to your bravery

suffice to say you wouldn't want my short movie clip of that Tarantula crawling on my hand??
Thanks for you kudo, but bravery had nothing to do with it - probably closer to stupidity.
