well, you said yourself that the best way to make a comic book adapation is to make something new out of it but still respect the source material, well Brian Singer totally didn't give a fuck about the source materiel, he just saw a few episodes of the 90s X-men cartoon, and saw some of those "Creepy Logan" moments ,and made up the rest himself
in the original comics, Logan did had a crush on Jean, but it wasn't as "imporant" as it was in the cartoon and in the movies, Jean & Scott were pretty much the best X-men couple, but by making Scott boring, giving Logan too much importance, and making the rest of the characters less developped, everything great about the X-men was left aside for the sake of the homophobia satire

I think Deadpool can work in PG13 if done right (not talking about Once upon a Deadpool, that's just a censured version of Deadpool 2 with new footage featuring Deadpool telling that story to an older Fred Savage)
