Rockruff was almost a great addition to Sun & Moon. As a cute puppy Pokemon with a stony collar, many were expecting it to be Normal/Rock. Being a pure Rock-type instead, the same as a Roggenrola for instance (a literal lump of stone) was confusing and disappointing. Rock/Normal was an interesting and unused type combination that is unlikely to have many other opportunities to appear, so it didn't make much sense.

This oddity was compounded by the fact it had two (and later, three!) evolutions, which were also pure Rock-type despite the opportunity to make them more unique. The Midnight form in particular shows clear signs of having Dark-type potential, another unused type combination (EDIT: except Tyranitar).

Ending up with three pure Rock-type Lycanroc's was a mistake IMO and one of the many reasons fans were let down by Gen 7. So, here's how I think they should be retconned, and it opens the door for cold climate regional variants that swap their Rock typing and features for Ice ones.

What do you think about Rockruff and Lycanroc's typing? Would you like to see these Icy variants? Should they have these type combos or should all three be pure Ice-type?
