Wagonbot Drones are Astrotrain's obedient servants, employed durign the Golden Age in his own private business.
See them in action and witness their destiny in Short Story: I'm Taking A Train .

Mass-produced with the same process used for the Infiltration Batch Protoforms, the Wagonbot drones are considered non-sentient.
Like other Drone Models, they are equipped with sophisticated AI processors, but they lack the proper Spark Core.
Brainstorm has proven, however, that in time their inner workings are complex enough to trigger the spontaneous growth of a quasi-Spark core, which has come to be known as the Shimmer Core.
This evolution can be accelerated artificially, as demonstrated by Perceptor's experiments with Blaster's "minions".
The Shimmer energy signature is not only similar to a Spark's, but also compatible on an osmosis transfusion level.
It is theorized that, under proper stimuli, a Shimmer Core can further evolve, reaching the level of a fully formed Spark Core.

The Wagonbot Drones make use of three different technologies to deploy their capacious alternate modes: intelligent metals, mass redistribution protocols and a basic form of mass displacement mixed with a tesseract distortion field.
Their armor plating is capable of resisting any and all hostile environmental conditions, allowing them to travel almost anywhere on Cybertron and in space.
These same properties allow them to carry within them a great variety of materials (included toxic, radioactive and corrosive ones).
Their wagon mode has minimal independence: they need to be hitched up to a locomotive to function properly.
This is why their "combined" alt mode is often referred to as "freight train".

The robot mode of the Wagonbot Drones has great strength (to move heavy cargos in and out), although its limbs are somewhat awkward.
The upkeep devices built into their arms allow for various tasks, from simple soldering to sophisticated nanomolecular engineering; they are essential in allowing the Drones to perform independent self-maintenance.
