You may know Ria as the mermaid girl from my Human As Can Be setting, but did you remember her attendant Iara ? Probably not.

Basically Iara is a Mermaid Companion, a species of fish that evolved to become humanoid, and whose sole purpose in existence is to serve as "pilot fish" to merfolk everywhere, following them and assisting them with whatever they may need. Basically, they're like tiny adorable undersea maids, and Iara tries to help out Ria in every way she can... at least when she's underwater with her, because Iara can't go on land.

Below Ria and Iara is the former's older sister, and the reason why she's so secretive about her true form, Marina.

Marina is a Siren, a title given to any mermaid who attacks and kills humans, normally by luring them into a trap and dragging them to deeper parts of the sea. Sirens go all the way back to ancient times, but in modern times merfolk society has outlawed them, since they wish to peacefully coexist with humans and leave them blissfully unaware of their existence. However, there are still mermaids and mermen who think humans are evil (especially nowadays with pollution and stuff) and take it upon themselves to rid the world of as many as they can without drawing attention to themselves. These merfolk are seen as terrorists and criminals, and are shunned by society. Nevertheless, some people actually support them in secret, hoping to bring the war to the humans.

Anyway, back to Marina. She's very resentful of humans and how they're destroying the ocean, and despite belonging to a wealthy family, through time she radicalized herself and became a Siren, attacking humans by pretending to be one (Sirens have developed magic charms that can turn them into humans when outside of water) and luring them to a vicious demise. Eventually Ria finds out and tells on her parents, who belong to one of the most prominent merfolk families, but is shocked to learn that they're fully aware of her crimes and have even covered them up, since they completely agree with her radical views. Ria decides to run away from the estate and from merfolk society, taking her trusty maid with her as well as stealing a magic charm from the Sirens, allowing herself to transform into a human and blend in with society in the surface, away from her nasty family in the sea.

So yeah, now you know why Ria hates going to the water so much.

Uuugh it was so hard to make Marina's tail tip look that good. Having to allign every single ribbon and piece... it wasn't as easy as Ria's mermaid tail, or as I thought it would be.

I only made Ria cry so I could write this silly title. How do tears work underwater you say? They just do. Maybe they're magical tears. What's she crying about? Maybe she's reminiscing of her family and her house, and Iara is trying to cheer her up
