Description Two days after Christmas, it was something like -25Β°C outside, but I couldn't resist getting out and taking a few pictures. This shot was taken outside of Sault Ste. Marie City Hall, and shows the St. Mary's River with the International Bridge and Algoma Steel in the background.

I was lucky enough to receive a new Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel for Christmas in 2004, and this was one of the very first images I made with that camera. The lens had this strange defect where it would create rainbow-like halos around any bright points of light in an image. So the ring around the moon in this image is not any form of atmospheric optics, but is rather just the work of a defective lens. I promptly had the lens replaced, but I sort of wish I had kept it for shots where I might want to use that effect. Oh well.

Anyway, from this point on, all of the digital shots in my gallery (with maybe one or two exceptions) will be from the 300D.

Ahh, your first dSLR photograph. I feel like I'm stalking you, looking through your more than extensive gallery of photos that date back as far as 2004. You really have much skill with taking pictures, even when it's just using something as simple as a point and shoot. I'm quite amazed by your work, and really can't wait to see more recent shots (2006ish).

Also, might I inquire, what lenses you normally use? Just the kit lens, 17-55 f/2.8, I'm interested.

Thank you for checking out my whole gallery and leaving such a nice comment, I appreciate it. For all of my images that have been posted so far, I have used the 18-55mm kit lens. I've since acquired a 75-300mm lens, but don't really get all that much use out of it. I've found that, if you can get reasonably good results stitching photos together, the kit lens is all you really need for wider angle shots.

The kit lens is already wide angle compared to a point and shoot =]
And you're very much welcome!

That's quite true, but yet it never seems to be wide enough! Oh well, I suppose I'll pick up a 10mm lens when I can afford one.

You can find a good D-SLR on eBay for fairly cheap now. My old 300D broke last fall, so I picked up another one on eBay for $550 while my first one was being repaired. Now I have two though, so I guess one is a "back-up".

well i don't even have my first job yet so...don't really have the money for anything. My dad gave me an old Minolta SLR from the late 70s that I've been trying to learn to use. It's a film camera, which I don't particularly like (since i'm poor) but it's fun to play with

Very nice shot. I'll miss that bridge and waterfront area for pictures now that I've left the Sault.

Yeah, but you're in Ottawa now? There's probably a lot more to photograph there than there is here.

True, but without a vehicle it's tougher in such a large city. In the Sault, I could easily walk frommy home right by Sault College, to the waterfront area, took about 30-40 minutes. Walking 40 minutes here gets me to the 417 or Best Buy, depending which way I go.

I need to learn how to shoot manually with my new D-SLR before I really get out and take some real shots. Plus, I need a tripod.

Well being in a large city, I imagine there'd be lots to explore. Just getting out with a camera and walking around can lead you to some great photo opportunities. For example, today I was able to get some pretty good shots from just walking around behind the Zellers Plaza and Alexander Henry. Good shots are everywhere if you look for them, and you don't always have to go out of your way to find them.

Also, shooting manually can be good, but I'd try experimenting with Av and Tv mode a little bit too. I usually shoot manually and bracket my shots, but whenever I want to just take one shot and get it right, I use Av mode.

Brilliant photo, Tarvis!
There's much to it that I really, really like...the fog on the water, the smoke from the chimneys, the pristine snow, the soft moon with its halo and of course the fact that you post this shot right now in late August...this way it cools some people off here!

beautiful..is the light on the snow a reflection of christmas lights from the city hall ?

tfavretto In reply to parallel-pam [2006-08-30 05:48:01 +0000 UTC]

No, the christmas lights are actually on the other side of the building, I believe. That orange glow is just from some lights along a walkway beside the river.
