Description Specially made for "Favorite scene" contest of
Text reference: From 2nd book, Eldest - at the end of chapter 28; "Out of the Past", continuous with the beginning of chapter 32; "On the Crags of Tel'naeir"

Quote from chapter "Out of the Past":

At the top of the knoll, the trees were replaced by a bed of red clover that ran several yards to the edge of a stone cliff. The cliff extended a league in either direction and dropped a thousand feet to the forest below, which pooled outward until it merged with the sky. It felt as if they stood on the edge of the world, staring across an endless expanse of forest.

I know this place, realized Eragon, remembering his vision of Togira Ikonoka.

Thud. The air shivered from the strength of the concussion. Thud. Another dull blow made Eragon’s teeth chatter. Thud. He jammed his fingers in his ears, trying to protect them from the painful spikes in pressure. The elves stood motionless.
Thud. The clover bent under a sudden gust of wind.
Thud. From below the edge of the cliff rose a huge gold dragon with a Rider on its back.

Quote from chapter "On the Crags of Tel'naeir":

Thud.

Bright as a flaming sun, the dragon hung before Eragon and everyone clustered along the Crags of Tel’naeír, buffeting them with gusts from its mighty wings. The dragon’s body appeared to be on fire as the brilliant dawn illuminated its golden scales and sprayed the ground and trees with dazzling chips of light. It was far larger than Saphira, large enough to beseveral hundred years old, and proportionally thicker in its neck, limbs, and tail. Upon its back sat the Rider, robes startling white against the brilliance of the scales.

Eragon fell to his knees, his face upturned. I’m not alone.... Awe and relief coursed through him. No more would he have to bear the responsibility of the Varden and of Galbatorix by himself. Here was one of the guardians of old resurrected from the depths of time to guide him, a living symbol, and a testament to the legends he had been raised with. Here was his master. Here was a legend!

End of quoting

Finally! After a week of hand cramping and eye pain. I made it! Woo!! This is the most detailed and largest picture I've ever drew. (original file size was around 1Gb, and I almost dropped dead in front of my computer when PhotoShop notified "Scratch disk is full" message! But yeah, I solved it.) I didn't mean it to be that large, but I couldn't get the correct scale of Gladr's enormous body with the crowd in the front and I worried that Oromis might appeared to be too small to draw as well. So I had to make this picture large enough to get everything in place.

I'm so thankful that I've been taking art extra class since last year, because now I can draw sky and landscape more naturally. Even human portrait got better on anatomical scale And you might notice further, my drawing style has become more colorful. Really love this! I've come to understand that, even though you see the object color is "A", it doesn't mean you have to paint "A", but the true color of that object are "b+c+d+... = A" That means I mixed "the colors of light" together to get the "visual light" I imagine. And you know what, taking art class has helped me to be dare enough to choose various ranges of color in PhotoShop's 1000 swatches! I found myself scrolled up and down that swatch panel 2-3 times before I choose the correct color

It was really fun to draw in PhotoShop, because I could make as much as surreal effects I wanted. But it's so tiring when I had to scratch and blend those dragon scales one-by-one! Damn... I'm not gonna draw dragon any other time soon.

Okay, let's talk about this scene...

Why I choose this scene?

Many of IC fans may found this scene quite a cliche - most of heroes need good teacher - right? But for me, this scene gave me goosebumps! I was so surprised that there was another rider from the old time left here, in Eragon's time. (Beside Galbatorix and Brom of course.) I had to reread that last paragraph for 3 times! Lol.... I didn't expect anything flew up from the cliff actually.
Then, I had the second episode of goosebumps on the chapter "On the Crags of Tel'naeir", where CP described how gladr was so bright in the sun and I felt exactly how Eragon felt that time "He's not alone anymore!" I almost cried on this. Such a beautiful scene that always come first to my mind when I think about my IC fav scenes. TwT Well done, CP!

And later on, when Oromis proved how good he was as a teacher to Eragon, I eventually become to love Oromis so much. I almost cried when Oromis and Gladr were killed in Brisingr But I don't want to draw how they died, I want to draw the scene that shows how glorious they were instead.

Extra picture's descriptions
- Dragons' scale referenced from book cover.
- I know that CP didn't mention a heavy cluster of dust in this scene, but I just want to make that windy effect looks more obvious. So I add a ton of dust.
- Eragon recieved a new set of clothing that morning before this scene, which included 2 tunics of russet trimmed with thimbleberry green, a set of creamy leggings, and socks. So I drew him wearing this new tunic. And later when Eragon talked to Oromis, he had to take his glove of before Oromis examine his palm. That means he had to wore glove before that. So yeah, he wore black glove on his right hand in this picture.
- I don't know about Orik's clothing and hair color, but I want to identify him with that iron helmet with clan symbol. He's eating dust LOL
- I originally drew Arya wearing a green dress, but it may look a bit out of character. So I gave her a formal black leather suit instead.

Thanks I tried to make her looked proud and happy to see Oromis and Glaedr As many fans have assumed that they were some kind of close friends, that was also why she cried when they died in book three...
I love her expression too, the best in this pic. My mind was carried away with those songs I listened when I was drawing her

Thank you I listened to some playlist on yookamusic.com especially on those instrumental music and piano. They really helped my imagination to flow like a river lol, I also listened too some old dos games soundtrack, like Pinballs and Rayman. I'm still amazed that the composers could produced such a great music in that 90', where we hadn't got much technology, and only with some midi tools. and yes, Islanzadi with her swan cape. I tried to make it looked puffy haha. And her expression was like a bit solemn in the way the elves would mask their emotions and I based on how she reacted when she learned that Oromis never told her Arya was alive on the next scene. She was quite ferious toward him

And of course, I'd love drawing Eragon fan art and gonna draw the next art soon. But no dragons this time, their scales were painful to work on haha

Haha I understand. I never draw dragon because of the scales (and actually my dragons looks always creepy :/ )
I feel for Islanzadie
I would have acted the same if I had thought I had lost my daughter....
I know many people don´t like her because she has been stated to be very manipulative and she banished her own daughter but I do like her.
She is one of the most powerfull femals in inheritance and I love strong womens
It´s a pitty that Paolini never told us more about hers and Aryas erlier life....

Yeah, he never told us about them. Many fans made Arya and Islanzadi's story in fan fictions. But when I finished the whole series, some of them are not get along with it anyway, I still feel bad Islanzadi.

LadyMarmelade01 In reply to thaomani [2013-06-05 10:48:23 +0000 UTC]

So true... and many of them always state her (islanzadi) as the "Evil" on... at least these one´s I have read
But I belive there must be more behinde.... or it should be (I don´t know how far paolini designed the characters past because we never got some "real" facts... )
Therefore I have to admitt that the whole relationship between the both looks a little bit strange
