"I finally decided to ask myself a question I had been avoiding for a long time...what's the point of even trying anymore?..."

This is the Lincoln we see at the beginning of the second arc for Two Reflections. One has to go through a serious existential crisis in order to turn into the total mess Lincoln has become; but in spite his near eternal pessimism and being an empty shell, he still has a few people who refused to give up on him.
