"...and here's our twelve and under room!"

Spike peered into the warmly lit room. He could see about six or so foals, all playing and running round. A couple were roughhousing, the taller foal tugging on the smaller's ear, and one was running around with a piece of paper in their mouth. The dragon felt a wave of nervousness wash over him at the feeling of getting to know one of these little guys and maybe being able to take them home one day.

"...that one is Bumblebee, he's a feisty one and a bit of a troublemaker..."

What if they don't like me? What if they get hurt because of me? What if they just go home with me because they don't like this place? Spike started to fidget, the claw he had on the walls tightening and nearly scratching off the light orange paint. What if they want their birth parents more than me? What if I'm not good enough for them?

"...he's supposedly Military Adviser Pharynx's son. It's rumored that he's a half-breed, but he's so sweet and-"

"Wait, what's his name?"

The changeling, Cercus, happily repeated "Bishop, Pharynx's kid. He's doesn't really talk much but he loves to color and play the piano. Pretty easy for him, he's actually got paws-"

Spike finally caught sight of who the changeling was talking about. Little Bishop was the furriest one in the room, the only one who wasn't playing. He seemed to be working on something, his little paws working back and forth rapidly. He set down what he had in his hand and picked up something else, starting to scribble again. "A-and he's a...half-breed...?" Spike remembered what it was like to be discriminated against for not being a pony back when Twilight first started bringing him to school. He hoped that Bishop wasn't a victim of hate like he was.

"Well, it's rumored. He might just be going through a little phase before he grows in his hoof-claws like the other changeling kids, but he's already got the hoof-claws on his back legs, and that's not..." Cercus sighed. "We don't really know what he is, but that doesn't stop us from loving him as much as the other foals." Xe perked up when xe added the last bit. "We all love Bishop so much. He's a good kid."

"Do you think I could talk to him?"

"Of course!" Cercus took Spike's claw in xyr own, guiding him over to the table where Bishop was. "Hey, Bishop, buddy, this is Mr. Spike. Do you want to talk to him for a bit?"

"Okay." Bishop's eyes didn't come off from his drawing. Spike sat beside him, his huge, lumbering body having to slump over to properly talk and hear the little guy. Cercus left the room, taking the other foals with him out to the playground to give the two quiet.

"So...what are you drawing?"

"A trees," Bishop said, still concentrated on his completing his picture.

"You like trees?"

"Yea."

"So do I. I think it's nice to walk in the woods under all those trees and be in the quiet."

Bishop looked up at Spike, his big, beautiful eyes peering into Spike's. "Me too. No noise is pretty."

"Yeah?"

"Yea."

"What other things do you like?" Bishop perked up and started to go on about all the different colors in the rainbow and how pretty the sky was. Spike smiled as he watched Bishop become more and more animated. I think I like this little guy.

and about three months later spike had officially adopted bishop

spike's a happy single parent who's had his son for a few years now (he adopted bishop when he was 4-5). bishop keeps trying to get spike to go out with his teacher, ms. ocellus

Fun fact! Bishop's nickname, "Champion", was from when he beat Spike in a race to the forest they always take walks in. The nickname stuck

Another thing: there's a couple of reasons that people thought Bishop was Pharynx's son. Pharynx is awkward around all kids, and Bishop's coat colors and horns reminded people of Pharynx, for examples. Plot twist: the two aren't related. Bishop is half ursa major/half kirin (deer-dragon). Pharynx just doesn't like kids
