I'm just curious how everyone actually uses it. How does one use a builder like this one? (Apologies, I've never actually handled a builder before.)

Well probably the easiest way as well as the way I use it is with Microsoft paint.
I know someone else who doesn't have a PC so instead he traces the pieces out by hand onto a piece of paper using only his phone for reference.

You first make a new bitmap image and then turn it into a PNG and get rid of the original bitmap because when you upload something as a bitmap it turns into a JPEG then you title the PNG however you want and then you right click and click edit and when it is open then you click the copy paste selection marked by the dotted line box and then underneath it you should see the word select with an arrow below it and then you will select transparent selection which will make it so that your secondary color will not be connected to anything that you were moving and then you simply copy paste the parts you want into the picture and then you can arrange them however you want.
But keep in mind that the rotate tool in MS paint only goes 90Β° as well as flip vertically and flip horizontally so she won of specific piece to be tilted at a different angle and you're gonna have to do it in a different program and then copy paste it back into the picture.
I will leave to you a couple links below of a couple tutorials that the guy who made the style that I work in made to help people get started but keep in mind that he works in a slightly different program.
