Description

The "Wraith" is an air superiority single seat stealth fighter designed for aircraft carrier launch and recovery. For start and landing, slow flight and dogfighting, the wings are in forward position and the V-tail is folded upward, allowing for high lift, excellent manoeuvrability. For supersonic flight including supercruise, the wings are swept back and the V-tail is folded down, improving aerodynamics and further decreasing its radar signature. In this configuration, the F-40A is able to reach high speeds, burns less fuel and has better stealth features. As such, the aircraft fulfils the requirement for a dedicated anti-air carrier aircraft capable of extended Mach 2 supercruise and possessing an offensive fiber laser weapon system (LWS), advanced air to air missiles, artificial intelligence, embedded distributed sensor systems, and next generation stealth features.

I'm suddenly reminded of the F-14 Tomcat and the F-117 Nighthawk (Stealth Fighter). Good work on this.

While i am honestly late.. The swing-wing mechanism adds weight upon weight. something you should try and avoid otherwise you end up experiencing what the FB-111 went though. Also. there's a lot of things that go into Maneuverability:For instance. Lower wingloading obviously improves turn. but Body lift with proper wing-blending and LERXes can also help increase turn rate... the zero sweep wouldn't actually contribute to maneuverability:It suffers too much drag in the 500+mph range and potentially could cause problems with roll rate. Also for supersonic flight. you want to make sure Center of Lift shift to the rear is not as extreme. and for that. you use Close coupled canards of the Coplanar type (So they don't increase RCS). they also have some benefits in that AoA range is higher. Center of lift shift is less extreme obviously. reducing induced and trimmed drag at mach 1.5+ speeds. and if Statically unloaded.. you avoid Vortex drag in level flight further improving L/D ratio. reduce drag in 10+ degrees AoA maneuvers and reduce drag a bit compared to canard-off configurations (you can get as much as 10% reduction).. In cruise flight. you simply set them to Neutral AoA to avoid drag. but either way. lets get on to Wing sweep:

For your fighter. i suggest a combat sweep of 40 degrees. this sweep results in transonic bias with supersonic capability (and can also allow vortex effect from canards to be made full use of as well as allowing good Angle of attack capability). Unswept wings often suffer too much drag at supersonic speeds (unless you have supersonic diamond airfoils. anti shock bodies. keeping thickness down. and a whole bunch of measures) while highly swept 65+ degrees wing results in poor airfield performance. bad induced drag and issues with low-speed maneuverability.

Don't get me wrong. back at this time. we didn't have access to data.. But for future aircraft designs. i think you should take these into factor. if you want good supercruise performance.. you want to keep Trim drag down which means preventing center CL shift from happening as much as possible. usage of Supersonic airfoils. Wave-riding wingtips.etc. but in the end. you will have to decide on if you want to focus on sheer mach 3+ performance of a good mach 0.5-2 performance but poor mach 3+ capability. (Laser weapons would also needed to be pulsed in the 50+ kw range if you want to have any hope of doing damage and are too lowly in the CAS role.  i suggest you use something like 30mm cannons. hopefully with 600 rounds total unless you have Fallout-type "Laser" particle beam weapons.. then go on as much as you want with the Laser weapons.)

Well. to be fair. i am more into careful plausible-but-need advances designs. and of course Magitek. but they both don't involve complex and heavy mechanisms. and tend to be more conventional. Such as say. a Ducted rocket/air augmented Me-263. of a Magically enhanced fuel serving as a replacement for Zip boron fuels. (Yes. you can increase how much lift is produced. no. you can't hover like repulsorlifts.. but you can improve maneuverability and wingloading)
