Description "Welcome to Blue, Spartans. We're going to make a great team."

I've always found there to be something endearing about the ending scene of Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. It's a satisfactory denouement to the novel's story but leaves you excited for what's coming next for these characters. It's also very bittersweet because when you think about it, this is also when Nylund parted with them. Oh, he did some more Halo stuff, but the GoO crew was left hanging.

And what happens after this... well. Let's not talk about that.

----

The way the characters are posed here isn't fully in line with the way the scene is described, but I wanted to show everyone's faces, which is also why the Spartans aren't wearing their helmets for no reason (can you tell who's who?). I wanted to stay as close to the book(s) as possible with their depictions, though there's obviously some bits where I had to fill in the blanks. I also wanted to include the stone paths and other details described in the novel, though the Forerunner spires are an artistic flourish. The book makes no mention of such things but I thought they worked well to provide some grandeur to the setting.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "They're inside a Dyson sphere, so you should be able to see the landscape curve up beyond the horizon." This isn't actually the case, however: unlike the Shield World in Halo Wars, the Onyx Dyson sphere is so massive that the curve isn't visible with the naked eye, which is actually noted in the novel. I wanted to stay true to this description at the risk of making people think it's a mistake.

The use of default armor for the characters is likewise intentional. I'm aware individualistic and custom-colored armor has become standard for Spartans by now but I still prefer them the way I used to imagine them when I first read the classic books. In hindsight, I could've given them some basic variation but there's a certain charm to the default MJOLNIR.

One other thing I wanted to do is show the SPI armor's stealth properties. Official sources have yet to depict the camo coating so there's quite a bit of freedom to envision how it might look. The reason I chose to show the camo on in a non-combat setting like this, aside from the neat visual effect, is the impression I got from Ghosts of Onyx that it's practically always on, even when the Spartans are outside combat, and hence there are no power issues with keeping it active casually like this. One might note that Olivia's forearms aren't "blending in" with her and Ash's visors. This is intentional, as I reasoned that the camo system might be able to identify surfaces which are clearly part of the suit itself and omit them from the camo patterns it generates, especially when it comes to the rather overt golden faceplate. The visor is probably camouflaged anyway when the suit is active (or when the helmet is on).

I guess there's plenty worse places to end up trapped. I've often wondered what it'd be like to explore a massive construct-world like that, or the Ark.

I actually like immensely that you blued out the horizon. I think that stands out the most since, I'll be frank, even I imagined the dyson sphere having the interior visible. Makes you wonder why the Forerunners ddn't build a whole bunch of these things over the galaxy.

Well... maybe they did.

Mendez channeling Johnson in the back gets a good smile from me. Though he doesn't look angry enough!

A lot of people seem to miss the horizon thing. But when you think about it, the distances involved are in the same ballpark as looking at other planets in the Solar System. And you definitely can't make out surface features on Mars or Mercury from Earth.

I think building just this one proper Dyson sphere should be so monumental an undertaking it would've drained a ridiculous amount of resources, Forerunners or not. Like... the thing is mindbogglingly huge. You could put all the other Forerunner structures we've seen together and they'd just be a tiny speck next to the Dyson sphere.

Well, Mendez did always like the same brand of cigars as Johnson. I guess he's more confused than angry here.

Right, of course, that makes perfect sense to have such a large distance make it hard to have surface features visible. Of course though, this is by far the largest Forerunner construct ever actually made. Like, ever. In raw surface area, this is larger than even the Ark. Like, big. Really big. I'm surprised people aren't taking advantage to write about this since it makes Ringworld look like a Hula Hoop. I would love a game set inside of Trevelyan. Probably won't get one, but I can dream. They certainly have the space.

What I don't know is if the Shield World basically enveloped the star when it returned to realspace, or if it appeared somewhere else. The books were never clear on that. Not really an issue, but something I never knew about. All the same though, it's the most interesting location in the series so far.

And while Forerunners maybe haven't constructed as many of these monsters, they worked on smaller ones. We know that of course.

Well, it's not a super happy situation. They're still kind of recovering from quite a few of their teammates dying and are also trapped in an almost incomprehensible alien world which may have anything in store for them. But if anyone were to see the positives of the situation -- the opportunities that await and the camaraderie that's already developed between the old and new Spartans -- it's probably Kelly.

They way you managed coloring the active camouflage is awesome.

Thanks. I wanted to make it look less "perfect" than Covenant active camo with the rough jagged shapes so I'm glad my idea works.

I'm so glad to see somebody who's read the novel remember every detail and putting it into artwork. Blue Team's original Mark VI is way better than 343's new armor redesign that they're forcing in to the story.

Yeah, it's really irksome how 343i has Blue Team wearing the redesigned armor when they should still have their classic Mk. VI. I'm not a fan of how they made everyone's armor a different color either.

Raz-Sukal In reply to The-Chronothaur [2015-07-17 12:13:23 +0000 UTC]

Why would they keep Mk. VI, when the Gen2 was being put into circulation as early as '53? The armor shown in Halo 5, is not their original armor. It's all upgraded components.

I'm referring to the Halo 2 Anniversary terminals, where Fred and Linda are wearing armor identical to their GEN2 suits in October 2552. The official explanation is that they're testing the armor, but it's quite obvious 343i/Sequence did it for the sake of making the characters visually identifiable. Nevertheless, I'd have preferred they wear Mark VI in that scene and up until after they've been recovered from Onyx.

It just seems really weird that the UNSC was seemingly planning to make new models of MJOLNIR armor for Spartans whose idea wasn't even thought of prior to the end of the war.

Great work, its all nicely arranged! I've never seen this scene drawn by someone else before. I understand how you felt about the next book, I expected more. Also nice that you noted the sphere's size and didnt try to show "LAND in the sky".
