                Levi’s cold gaze met with yours, causing you to nearly flinch. What was happening between you two? Everything was changing, and for the worse no less. All you wanted was for Levi to look at you with love in his eyes again, for him to show you his little smirk since a full-on smile wasn’t his thing. You just wanted to know that he really did care about you.

    Was it your fault why things had changed so suddenly? Surely it wasn’t. Thinking back you couldn’t recall anything that had changed between you and Levi. Yet here you two were, Levi clearly struggling to get the words out. The words that you knew would end things between you two for good. The words that you didn’t want to hear.

    “Levi,” you said gently, deciding to take the reins. “I don’t know what you’re thinking but can only imagine that it… That it isn’t going to be good,” you began, taking a deep breath. “I know that something is different between us and it kills me not knowing what it is that changed because I would like to try and fix whatever happened before we give up, but… But I don’t know what changed, so I don’t know what we can possibly do,” you said, your (e/c) eyes filling with unshed tears. Levi let his eyes wander before meeting with yours again.

    You began to cry as you looked into his eyes. The look he had on his face was so broken you began to doubt your thoughts as to what was happening between you two. Maybe it had nothing to do with your relationship, but something to do with Levi that you hadn’t realized. As you continued to look at Levi, you saw the look of a defeated man who had stopped showing his emotions for his own sake, you saw all the vulnerability that he normally hid so well. You saw someone in need of comfort.

    “(Y/n),” Levi finally said, taking a deep breath. “All the shit that happened – with my squad, with everything,” he said, his eyes staring blankly at the wall behind you, “How can I possibly face the Scouting Legion again? How can I go out there when their blood is on my hands?” He asked, running his fingers through his raven locks, hiding half his face from you with his hand as he lost control of his emotions.

    Now you really cried. Of course this had nothing to do with you and you felt stupid to think otherwise. You realized that he had been growing more and more distant since he had returned from the last expedition outside the Wall. You felt selfish for thinking it had been about you. Of course he would blame himself for their deaths – but you knew it wasn’t his fault in the slightest.

Everything is gone

Now I’m six feet under

Regrets and memories, for me to wonder

    “Levi,” you whisper, moving closer to your boyfriend. “It’s normal to grieve; they were your friends, your team… But it’s not okay to blame yourself for their deaths. It wasn’t your fault –”

    “But maybe I could have saved them!” Levi shouted, his face contorting in sadness and pain. “If I had only fucking been there I would have fought with them! I would have killed that bitch before allowing myself or my squad to fall victim to her!” He said.

    You wrapped your arms around Levi, feeling him tense up and then relax into you, “It’s not your fault,” you said, “And besides, if you had been there and died by their sides, then what would I be left with?” You questioned.

Rest in peace, they say to me

But I just wanted to be free

    “We should have just fucking stuck together, like a squad is supposed to do.”

    “They did what they had to do in order to save Eren, right?” You said, forcing Levi to look into your eyes.

    “That fucking brat still got himself caught by the bitch anyways,” Levi said angrily.

                “Remember what you told me when we first met, Levi? We both knew that the Scouting Legion would be dangerous and many of our friends would die – maybe even each other… But we promised that every choice we made would be a choice with no regrets because of what happened in your past. Just remember that this time around you were following the Commander’s orders, and your squad followed yours. You can’t keep pushing me out like this. I don’t want to see you slowly succumb into nothing – that would be worse than death. You’d be an empty husk of the person you once were; the person that I am in love with,” you smiled.

                Levi looked up at you, his steely eyes looking lovingly at you, his cheeks slightly flushed from his emotional outburst, and you smiled.

And this silence

Bred into my selfless violence

    “(Y/n), I know I act like I don’t give a fuck about you sometimes, and I know that I shouldn’t… But these are the times I’m glad I have you by my side,” Levi said, his gaze so intense you could feel colour rushing to your cheeks. “But I still can’t help but feel empty without their life, their presence around me. It might take me a while, but I’ll try to be more open with you,” he said, his exhaustion showing plain on his face.

And now I am dead

    “That’s good enough for me,” you said, pulling Levi into another hug. You felt his arms wrap around you as he buried his head in your (h/c) locks. You appreciated it when Levi took the time to say how he truly felt instead of hiding behind his neutral façade. No matter how much he said he could handle, he was still human and every human had their limits. You closed your eyes and enjoyed the embrace while it lasted. “Just don’t close me out again, because that’s when you start to become dead inside,” you whispered. Levi responded by holding you tighter, pulling you in closer.
