Description
The gang reacting to the prospect of grave-robbing.I wanted to draw Theodore and Gangfield side by side with Theo's new look and this seemed like the perfect picture to test it out with!
Based on the Original
Hopefully my long-time Watchers can have a chuckle at it.

This PERFECTLY depicts their personalities regarding the dead.
Theo: "What? No! We can't rob a grave! Are you crazy?
Adam: "Awesome! Dead bodies!"Β Β
Gangfield: β¦ haven't really figured out his personality yet, so I can't say I have an idea as to what he'd be thinkingβ¦ but that smug grin, though.Β Β

Theodore: "We're doing WHAT?"
Gangfield'd be like, "Yup, we sure are. Hope that doesn't bother you, Wythert, unless you want me to tell Ruth you were afraid."
"Why would- wait, where did you get that pipe? You don't smoke."
"I found it. In the mansion."
"β¦Ew."
Adam: "Let's wreck stuff! WOOO!"

I can totally see all your characters personality shine through this picture.
I can totally imagine the conversation going like this:
Some random person: "You all will have to go graverobbing."
Adam's: "AAAAWWW YIIIIIISSSS! MY TIME HAS COME!"
Theo: "Steal a DEAD PERSON? From the grave? With THIS shuffle?WHAAAAAAAT?"
And Gangfield's like "And I shall look absolutely DASHING as I do it."
XD

The improvement two short years can do, huh? This picture definitely shows how different they are, especially the hairs ;D. THERE IS NO CONFUSION! Of course I know they're all different, but hey, it doesn't hut to reaffirm it (;
Two questions: How long does it take you to draw one of these sketches? And how are you going to transition Theo's haircut into the story? o.o
π: 0 β©: 1
The-Ez In reply to ashvearts [2015-04-19 21:52:29 +0000 UTC]
Haha! Well two years ago I was still very much under the influence of that dang anime style and their placid-ass expressions.
Uhm, this sketch took about two hours. 20 mins to settle on a composition with the right scale, position, etc and then 30-40 minutes per character.
And I'll be doing all the illustrations for the novel from scratch in August/September of this year, so I'll just be plopping short-haired Theo in there from the start. His hair's still long and messy enough to fit all the descriptions I've already written for him. Easy!
π: 0 β©: 1
ashvearts In reply to The-Ez [2015-04-19 22:13:04 +0000 UTC]
Gosh, I still have a long way to go, then. My downfall is that I'm far too slow for my liking. I'm usually faster when it comes to finished sketches, but I spent so much time trying to perfect the lineart and cleaning up the paper before scanning, that time flies! Let's not talk about the digital clean-up. That process probably takes longer than the drawing did!
And I may as well kill two birds with one stone, since you mentioned anime in another reply of yours (better than spam replying to every single comment haha). In some ways the anime was definitely hard for me to shake off, too. At the beginning, I switched so quickly into Western style that my characters all looked Asian or just weird! This wouldn't be a bad thing if they actually WERE Asian, but as you know, they're not XD I even considered turning Elock biracial because I just couldn't get it right :I As time passed, though, I got a lot better, a lot faster, but then they ended up looking too DISNEY and it was driving me insane.
It irked to go from one end of the spectrum to the next. Even if my style is similar to Disney, I want to develop my own style. Actually.. I sometimes get bugged when people compare my style directly to Disney. For some odd reason, it's not a big compliment for me. I guess it's because I want to make my own imprint.
As for you, the Theo sketches did have some of that anime feel (in the best way possible). As you said, there is a lot of good to anime and I want to keep that goodness as much as you do. However, I didn't find it to be a style that I could express myself in anymore. I still enjoy anime, but it's just not my style anymore D:

Chamaguchi In reply to ashvearts [2015-04-20 00:56:46 +0000 UTC]
I'm sorry to creep by haha, but it's nice to see someone who appreciates both sides of the spectrum (as in anime & Western cartoons). :) I just find it saddening how Western artists feel the need to bash anime -- which I've seen happen by so many Western cartoon artists on this site -- and even vice versa, albeit not as often. Of course, to each their own, but I personally find both styles beautiful and they both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I guess I wish more people were more open to see the beauty in both styles and not uh ... see things so black and white. ):Β
I'm not sure if I'm a hypocrite for saying the above because I too am re-experimenting with a more cartoony style aka going back to my early childhood roots (albeit more on the Craig McCracken end (Wonder Over Yonder/Foster's Home)), but I still draw in anime style too because the art style has been a big part of my life for so long and it has its own share of aesthetics that I enjoy.
And I wanted to say, too, that it's nice that you want to develop your own style and make your own impact on the artistic world! I feel the same.

ashvearts In reply to Chamaguchi [2015-04-20 01:37:55 +0000 UTC]
That's very sweet of you! But don't worry too much about adding to the discussion. It's pretty awesome to hear what others have to say!
I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't influenced by anime. Yeah, I don't watch it as much as I used to, but there are some things I can't ever let go of. Obviously, the influence is more abstract than physical, but it's still there. I still follow some series and fall head over heels for the characters and the stories I've always loved anime action, too, so that's definitely a plus!
And no, you're definitely not a hypocrite. Everyone has the right to experiment with their styles as they see fit. When I started drawing again, I knew anime wasn't going to cut it for me. I needed something more tangible, and of course, I found that through western animation. American cartoons made an impact on me just as much as anime did, so I don't like to discriminate.
Besides, Attack on Titan had very clear Western influence to it, as Avatar the Last Airbender was heavily inspired by anime. Studio Ghibli is amazing in its own right and American directors have been inspired by movies like Akira and shows like Ghost In the Shell. When you put it all together, I don't see what the big deal is in hating either style. We're all just trying to tell stories at the end of the day :Y

Chamaguchi In reply to ashvearts [2015-04-20 03:16:35 +0000 UTC]
Aw, thanks for being open-minded and sweet about everything. It's appreciated. <3
Same here! I'm not one to watch anime anymore either, partially because I'm annoyed at all the cliches and stereotypes that I see being used over and over again (and because I'm lazy af when it comes to watching shows hnnnng), but the style itself is something I admire still. <3 But oh yes, anime action is definitely pretty awesome.
Oh, did you take a break from drawing for a while? Regardless, I'm happy you've found a style to settle in and that you feel suits you best! I do see why people do move from anime to cartoon, I'll admit -- on a general level, the western style is easier to experiment with and is more tangible like you've said. Despite me drawing anime-style for longer than I have cartoon, I've already found it easier to have fun with the style and not end up feeling frustrated or inadequate. You said people compare your style a lot to Disney, but I'm just curious: was Disney ever an influence on your work? :3 I've just taken a quick peek at your gallery and I don't really see the Disney influence! (Shafara seems like a pretty awesome character by the way.)
Exactly! I especially love when cartoons are influenced by anime and vice versa, like the shows and movies that you've mentioned. * __ *

Thank you very much! For both taking a peek at my stuff and being honest about my style ^^ I guess it can't be helped being compared to Disney. Everyone interprets my style differently . And oh yes, Disney is very influential for me. It's very hard for me to pick a fave Disney film (though I think Treasure Planet and the Lion King come real close), but what influences me more are their characters. That, and their lovely, organic expressions
I spend a lot of my time going to Disney World, too. I LOVE it there!
And yeah, I took a pretty long break
But that's a whole 'nother story.
Anyways, I feel bad for hogging up Ez's comments xD If you want to talk to me, feel free to drop me a note or comment on my profile. I should ask you the same question, though! Your gallery is empty! D:
