While I liked the changelings and all, I just don't GET fantasy creatures that supposedly feed off of emotions. The way I see it, humans are emotion making machines and we generate feelings through interaction, thoughts, and the general atmosphere at the time. Therefore, any relationship between humans (and their fictional pony counterparts) and a pathovore (a creature that eats emotions) should be commensalistic at the worst and perhaps even mutualistic sometimes, but never parasitic.
For example: Dementors. As they approach, everything freezes around you and you are filled with feelings of terror. They have sucked out your happiness, you are no longer happy so there is no reason for them to continue feeding, you are no longer a happiness-generating machine and the dementors should, logically, move on or starve themselves to death.
Yes, the dementors are supposed to be a metaphor for depression, I just think that saying they "suck happiness" is a clumsy way to go about it.
But that's my two cents.

I'm actually working on an AU where the Changelings we see are just corrupted Flutterponies and that's why they're so confusing. True Changelings on the other hand eat all emotions, do it from the air without causing them and share the ponies' vivid and varied color scheming.

Shining Armour: "Cadence."
Changeling: "What?"
Shining Armour: "Shape-shift to be Cadence. Do it 100% right... and I'll let you live."
The Changeling, cowering before the unicorn, transforms.
Changeling-Cadence: "Is-is this enough?"
Shining Armour: "No."
The Changeling whimpers, tasting the hatred and glee radiating from the towering equine.
Shining Armour: "Again. Act like her. "
Changeling-Cadence: "S-s-Shiny? Honey - I - I love you! I love you so much and - and - and Twilight too!"
Shining Armour: "Not good enough." [Smirks sadistically, leans forward next to Changeling's ear, and hisses softly] "Not. Even. Close..."

I had thought about continuing it, and reveal that Shining Armour was possessed by a Windigo at the time (and the Changeling merely pretending helplessness to appeal to his sympathies, with no effect), but I never got around to it.Β

And to be honest, I'm glad it would have been pretending, because I hate woobie so much now, I actually MISS Chrysalis and her soldier's evil cackling every two minutes.

Yeah, I've seen that.
(sigh) I don't know. When I read fanfiction, omakes and whatever of MLP, they're grim bleak tone, complete vilification of characters we look up to, the villain wooby angst shoved down my throat are so commonplace it makes me think "why is this story being written about the candy coloured horses again?" It makes me appreciate the show more, but it's hard to get the bitter taste of unending and self-gratifying misery I read in fanfiction out of my mouth. MLP fanfiction are pretty much the East Enders of fanfiction sometimes.

I know, but they're just so swamped by "misery for misery's sake" it gets me down. I'd love to find a changeling fic that can be a happy one without unrelenting dispair and misery.

Maybe, but I guess with every villain who's woobified and given angst in fanfiction with the hope of achieving "depth", it makes one simply want to go back to the evil cackling baddies from the show, you know?

(whistles) "Yo, Shiney!" (takes out a bloodied bag out in front of him and dumps the decapitated heads of Cadence, Twilight, his daughter Skyla, and his parents out in front of him. Drops the bag and tells him) "Enjoy the rest of your nights rubbing it off in bed alone, mate. Ta." (turns to leave, whistling a merry tune).

The odd being, now visible through the dust, was no ordinary creature. It was a fox on two legs, clad in a blue suit with red boots, a red cape, and a red "S" within a red and yellow diamond-like shape emblazoned on the chest area. The anthro's name was Superfox.

That's the ideal relationship. The problem is: anything with Chrysalis, the Changelings' sociopathic bitch queen who gets perverse glee from brainwashing innocents, is probably going to be less than ideal...
