Sergio is a doormat. He would give a complete stranger the shirt off his back, so not being able to provide for his own family really hurts him. It may not be what's best for them in the long run, but he never got to learn the outcome because his kids never got to grow up. Hopefully Clara and Natasha will appreciate it as they get older and learn to be generous themselves, especially in an apocalyptic setting where compassion is needed most.

Yeah Elias was the problem-child. He was the older of the two and jealous that his baby sister got all the attention, and really he's just starved for quality time with his dad. :/ So he had this bitter resentment over Sergio and how absent he was all the time.

Elias is a lot like Natasha...Not "bad" kids by nature, they just act out because important things like role models and attention were denied to them in their childhoods.
