Description
STORY TIME!!:Ally chewed on her nails as she watched the first competitor enter the watery arena. This was her and Penryn's first show, and the level of anticipation was through the roof right now. As she watched the first rider take off around the course, Ally let out a sigh, and started heading for the trailer where Penryn waited. Walking backwards seemed too much of a challenge, so she turned around and jogged up the hill
Luckily she had parked her trailer so she could still watch what was going on at the lake as she finished the last touches on cleaning her red mare up before saddling. The fidgety mare's mane was finally done as the second rider finished up, making Ally sweat getting done and ready on time. To save time, she had left Penryn in only a grooming collar, but the mare had been tied in them so many times, Ally didn't think anything of it as she jogged around the corner to grab her saddle and bridle.
After a quick scan, she was able to find what she needed in the cluttered tack room, and just as she was jumping out, arms full of tack, the trailer heaved and wobbled. Ally landed face first in a pile on the ground.
"What that?" Ally began as she came around to see what on earth had happened.
Her heart stopped when she saw the lead and broken collar attached to the trailer. "Oh no..." she mumbled quietly to herself, arm's limp her side, and all color drained from her face. She took off at a dead run towards the arena, knowing that the water crazy mare of hers was surely headed straight for the crowded lakeside. As she got close enough to see what was going on, she could see that indeed, the big red beast was indeed splashing around in the edge of the arena.
To Ally's utter relief, she noticed the last rider had just finished their round and were giggling to themselves on the sideline as Penryn pranced around.
Seeing that there was no immanent danger, Ally slowed down to a slow jog, telling herself silently that she needed to get back to the gym more often. Just as Ally got to the water, Penryn had a different idea then getting caught and lead back to the trailer where she knew she would be reprimanded. Instead she took off to the deeper water, swishing her tail in a dare before hurling herself over the jumps in what seemed like no particular order.
She quickly tired as she flung herself around the arena, making bigger splashes then necessary. When the mare had finally had her fun, and was covered in a thick lather, she finally stopped what she was doing to get a drink from the cool water. Ally used that break in the mare's bad behavior to trapse through the water, getting soaked herself in the process, and quickly grabbed the mare by her tail. "Now you knock it off and come with me young lady. You are in more than enough trouble." Ally told the mare who now obediently followed with her head low and ears laid back giving her a guilty look.
Ally was too embarrassed to see what anyone had said or thought of the whole fiasco. She ducked her bright red face towards the ground and march right to her trailer with her equally red mare in tow.
What a way to start a show season. As soon as the mare was safely in the trailer, Ally busied herself with finding the host. An apology was in order. Who knows maybe they will count this as a free jumping? She thought to herself with a small chuckle and shake of her head. At least no one had been hurt.
Anyways, this was my entry for the Lakeside event hosted by RQsf but my computer had a spasm and corrupted the file, so this is as far as it got. Better luck next year. XD
Event: fav.me/d8kdjgg Lakeside Event on RQS
Horse: Penryn
Class: free jumping? (withdrawal from show jumping)
Rider: Would have been Ally
*edit* I have been super busy the past week, so I haven't had time to work on this, but when I went to work on it today, the file was corrupt and I was unable to open it, when it did open, it was a black screen....
*edit* That is probably the 10th fence I have drawn, and the only one that I could even stand. >.< Not a fan of Penryn's mane, but
*edit* This background is by far the best background I have ever done. This really helps my muse. Now just the jump and I don't know if I will ruin it with a rider or not. I will have to to enter it in the show I want to.
*edit* this turned out so much better then I expected it to thus far. I went back to my old shading, I have decided I still hate soft shading....
*edit* Wait what is that!? Soft shading!? I am not sure if I like that shading or not... What do you guys think? And a real background is in the works too! I have absolutely no idea how to draw water. >.< Not even a clue where to start, or water droplets or splashes, or the rider and tack... This is a big project. Anyways, here is an update to this far. DA is throwing fits on me, so I shall not say anymore. XD
If anyone has any hints or things they notice that are off about this, please critique is more then welcome!
So this is the start of Penryn's career. I know which show I want to enter it in, but for that show, I have to add a rider, so this is just a start to a pretty long process. I am getting quicker with the program though, so that's good. And NO REFERENCE USED!!!! (well some angles were looked up, but just lots of images with small sections.)

This is looking very cool so far! I really like the detail you've put into the jump, and your shading style is very unique
One thing I would say in terms of critique is that the water looks quite rough. Since it's a lake, and your horse has all 4 legs out of the water, it could be a lot more calm (less wiggly lines, just a few horizontal lines). Also, if you are going to put the reflection of the rainbow on the lake (which I think looks great) then you should try to reflect the horse and the jump as well.
Keep up the great work, I'm excited to see this finished!

Thank you so much for the lovely complements. Coming from you that really means the world to me! I loved your idea of adding her reflection to the water, something that hadn't even occurred to me! My thought process behind the rough waters was that rain usually makes our lakes quite wavy. XD I might have tried to blur them down some, but I lost the file so I don't get to try out any of your ideas. (this file on here is a quarter the size of the one I was working from) Which I really do think all of your suggestions would have helped the picture. Thank you again for the complements.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost the file! It's so horrible when those things happen
Could you enter it as is in the freejumping class of the show? It does seem a shame for it to not get used somehow!

haha yeah its beyond frustrating sometimes XD Worse things have happened right. Oh I would, but I don't think the free jumping would have the correct background. Who knows, I might put it in an RNG show and come up with a story to go with it based on the score.

The judge might forgive the background if she knows what happened But otherwise, the RNG show plan sounds good as well.
