Description Step 4: Shading:

Final step is to add in your shading. I'm still experimenting a bit with how to shade black hair in a black and white sketch with one pencil while still making it look good... At this point I basically make the bottom of each hair layer darker and the edges lighter, but also make the back hair darker than the front hair. I have also found it helped add to Rei's personality a LOT by shading in her eyebrows as dark as possible,

Naturally Pupils are as black as possible, then top of the eye is a darkish shade but not black, followed by a lighter shade, then leave the bottom white. Sometimes it helps to redraw the eye lines to redarken them after shading, ESPECIALLY around the white highlights

Finally clothing, the insides of clothes be it sleeves, leg holes, neckline all gets darkened, and shorts are black save for their stripe at the bottom. I've started experimenting a bit more with shading Rei's clothes, (and now shade her hair tie to be dark black) but again... it's tricky with only one pencil. Honestly, doing this black and white with one pencil forces you to be a lot more honest with your design. It's frustrating at times but it does force you to learn a lot which is helpful for this challenge.

Hope this breakdown was helpful too
