Description
The theme for this project was 'Hidden Meaning.' We were instructed to construct something that had some deeper meaning that could be discovered through the artwork.I decided on a criptex, a device that is designed to never be opened by anyone who doesn't know the right combination, for the purpose of delivering a message or item that demands secrecy.
This criptex is operated by navigating the maze in and out of the outer protective cylander. I personally designed the maze using a maze generating program online, added a few major changes and added specific points on the maze that will lock-up unless there is just the right amount of pressure in the right place. It took forever to saw out that maze.
So far, no one has been able to make it all the way through the maze except myself, since I memorized the path. Most people in my class cannot get past the first inch of the maze. Only one got about half way before giving up.
*edit #1* FAQ about Criptex:
Q: What are the materials you used? / What is it made of?
A: The Criptex is made of copper with a liver of sulfur patina on it. It is soldered at the seams with silver solder (works well with copper).
Q: How big is it? / What are the dimensions?
A: It stands about 8 inches tall with a diameter of 2 inches.
Q: How does the maze work/move?
A: The maze rotates on the inside of the outer cylinder. There is a thick pin that must be guided through the maze on the inside of the outer cylinder. On the back of that is a little shield that keeps people from cheating and popping the pin out of the maze. The maze takes about a minute or two to get through, if you know the path.
Q: How long did it take to make?
A: Actually, I don't remember entirely. There were a lot of late nights because I had to remake the maze. And the cutting took forever.
Q: Where did you get the idea?
A: Well, I got the name from the DaVinci Code. However, the DaVinci code's Criptex was made of stone and filled with a vinegar vile I think. (couldn't they just freeze the vinegar?) Mine was based more off of ancient contraptions like this: [link] which was an ancient greek/roman cipher. I mixed in another classic puzzle: the Labyrinth instead of a keycode. I wouldn't be surprised if Dan Brown has similar influences.
Q: Do I really know the entire path of that thing?
A: Yes and No. I don't have the entire maze memorized, but I did memorize the correct path through the maze. It is kind off like remembering the right combination to a complicated lock.
Q: Will you be selling them? / can I buy one / can you make one for me?
A: Right now I only have this one criptex. The materials are fairly easy to find in my town. The only problem would be cutting out the maze. If anyone knows how to cut copper like this and quickly I would love to hear it. As soon as I can figure that out, I'll start taking orders. I have no idea on how much a price would be.
Q: How much do you want for this one?
A: I can't say, I'm not even sure I will be selling it.
*edit#2* Due to a few requests I've removed that annoying dA watermark and added the high resolution download image. Check it out to see all the details close up.*

erm . . . well I'm no expert but wen eva we have to cut out a lot of sumfin or cut something out real neat we use the plotter or a laser cutter (lasers better for metal messy tho XD)

I use a power scroll saw to cut my copper sheets. You will need the type that can take both pinned and plain blades. Then you can use the jewelers saw blades...and these machines cut fast!

I had posted quite a while back suggesting mass production via laser technologies.
Had you followed up with any inquiries as to producing these for resale?

This is just amazing...no pun intended! Seriously, such a fascinating work...what you have done here is gloriously obscure...makes the mind engage with the concept of the maze, in a very tactile way. This is great...

Excellent piece of work mate, understated in aesthetics (at least in my opinions) which doesn't detract from the overall package.
It reminds me a lot of lock mechanisms on display at the V&A Museum in London. Clocks and Locks and generally ancienty mechanics are a passion of mine and you have satisfied the eyes with this piece.
Congrats.

use a labyrinth is maybe one of th best cryptex I come across with, congratulations. just another idea would be to hide the maze inside of a closed tube so it can't be seen and a 3ed one holding the pin. This would also gave the addition of the idea to have move able ring parts of the maze inside that tube... kind of number look in combination with the maze...

I do allot of laser cutting in my sculpture and metal art. Certain recent industrial lasers have the ability to cut patterns in tubing of the same dimension as your criptex, however NOT in copper. Copper and bronze reflect the light back into the laser and destroy it unless its VERY thin. If you were willing to have the outside tube made of stainless steel, you could have the laser cut your pattern WAY MORE PRECISELY than you ever could by hand...
I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about this, just send me a note.

Thank you very much! I've got a friend who has limited access to some cutting machines but I'm not sure if I will be able to use it yet. As far as using steel instead of copper, It wouldn't feel as archaic that way, but it would be a lot less breakable. I might just have to note you in a while about this!

amazing work. i don't think i've seen anything this creative here in ages. i love your take on the criptex (and would love a crack at it, lol) i think this way sounds a whole lot more challenging and inventive. genius i daresay.
as for how it looks, i love how the outside is so colorful and shiny, while the inside is darker and more menacing. don't know if you tried for that, hehe, oh well.
stunning piece.

man, that is amazing. I've made some complicated stuff, but this takes the cake. Was this all done with hand tools? a CNC program would make quick work of it, but that would ruin the artistry... very impressive

I just want to say how amazed I am at your technical skill! I haven't looked at the rest of your work yet, but you must be accustomed to working with metal to be able to make it stick in certain places. I can't imagine the time it took you to saw that out. Let alone the other piece that you scrapped. It truely makes me cringe at the thought of having to do that. But the end result is really wonderful! Please never sell it

Thats awsome. I have seen the boxes that you have to hold a certain way then tap one side down on a table turn the box 180 degrees do something else and whatnot to open it. Ive never been able to open one and I wont ever buy because at 50 dollars for the smallest one its a bit much for my wallet.
I would love to learn to make something similar to that yet more easily.
Great Job. You could sell those, probably for a good bit of money.
