Description
And here's another fantasy race from my Dungeons & Dragons campaign.Bugbears are the bigger, meaner, redder kind of Goblinoids, a species of sentient plant humanoids whose religion is based on mathematics. This one is a male Bugbear Warlord.

Brilliant. I love how he looks, strong and menacing. Love the details on the armour as well. Great job!

My comment was not intended to make fun of your drawing. It's a marvelous Bugbear. I was just making a failed joke about Dungeons and Dragons monster designers and the concept of a Bugbear

Oh yes, I'm sorry for my reaction. It's been a hard couple of days.
Yes, you're right, bugbears is probably not the most imaginative monster ever created, but if I may, I have three things to say in its favor:
- Gygax and the original D&D designers just took three creatures from folktales (goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears), and arbitrarily decided that they belonged to the same monstrous family. They could have added boggarts and bogeymen, if they wanted.
- The original folklore bugbear is not the most innovative of creatures anyway.
- An RPG monster roster needs shock troops and generic, all-purpose creatures.
- In my campaign, I decided that Goblinoids are the savage cousins of Elves, and Orcs are the savage cousins of Humans, and it's a simple decision that works surprisingly well in terms of adding flavor to those creatures.
Alright, four things.

Great design-- love the ornaments in his clothing and the nail-shaped teeth. Happy 2012, Julien!

I wanted my Goblinoids to look civilized, to contrast with the less civilized Orcs.
