Description My admiration for =jwelliott 's surreal deviations made me want to do something in the style of Swiss dark surrealist HR Giger. This particular deviation is about violence and dehumanization, obviously.

I had never done anything with an airbrush (real or virtual) before, and I very rarely draw or paint anything that dark and macabre, so I'm sure there are many aspects of this image that could be improved.

***Edited to make the black background really black.

Really well done. Excellent dark subject matter, your concept behind this is well thought out.

The overall image is a tad too dark- the background is beautiful, but it detracts from the image somewhat as the image itself is also very dark in colour and contrast.

Thank you, I really appreciate your comment, and the fact that you posted much more than "thats cool! ^_^!!!!11"

I think you're completely right about the overall darkness of this image, but I guess that since it was the first time I did anything like that, I wanted it to be very dark, you know, just for the sheer fun of it. Of course, I realize now that black on black is not the ideal combination of colors.

Considering this is your first time doing a airbrush this is very good. You got the overall shape of it, you could go into more detail with the parts of the guns if you like, but its not needed. Good job

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-11 11:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Maybe I should ease off the comics for a while!

Yeah, it's a pretty recent story... early nineties, I think.
It's set in Mexico, and tells the story of one of the earlier Phantoms encountering a mystic crystal skull that unleashes demons unless it's submerged in water.

Then our ever lovin' 21st Phantom has some fun with it.
Really great story!

Oh, I get it. I always forget that the character is still around. I don't think I've ever read any Phantom story not written by Falk.

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-11 15:10:48 +0000 UTC]

You're in the US, aren't you?
Yeah, Moonstone are printing new Phantom stories, but it's amazing how one of the very first 'super heroes' all but died in the States!

Up until the movie, the Phantom was practically an adopted Australian pop culture icon, here!
For some reason, propably the general decline of comics, he faded away, but there's still a new issue every fortnight!

Sweden is the only country I know of that rivals, or surpasses us in "Phandom."

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to SpringyNinja [2005-09-11 16:01:08 +0000 UTC]

In the US? Naaah. I'm Swiss. I don't know if I should be happy or sad that my poor command of the English language could pass for American!

The last time I saw a Phantom strip was at least ten years ago. It used to be published in fumetti (Italian comics) magazines, but these days I don't know if it's still the case.

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-12 04:54:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, sorry, my mistake.

You write better English than a lot of Americans.

If you had the Italian Phantom, does that mean you think of him as red?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to SpringyNinja [2005-09-12 05:33:22 +0000 UTC]

No, it's not the Italian Phantom. It's the French Phantom, printed in the same little books as italian comics such as Diabolik and Dylan Dog. Most of it is in black and white, but when the Phantom was on the cover, he was wearing the classic purple costume.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-12 13:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Ah, cool.

I don't know a lot about him, but I quite like Diabolik.
Enjoyed Fantomex in Grant Morrison's New X-Men a great deal, too.

I'm trying to take some of those broader influences into my own comics work.
I actually have a character that's loosely inspired by Killing, who I believe is also Italian, and wears a skull mask.

Our Phantom strips are black and white too, but of course, he's purple here.
The countries that coloured him otherwise always fascinate me. I have to say, I rather like Sweden's dark blue...

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to SpringyNinja [2005-09-12 13:14:52 +0000 UTC]

It becomes even more fascinating when you realize that Lee Falk intended him to be grey, and kept describing him as grey for a long time, even though he was obviously purple.

SpringyNinja In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2005-09-13 03:04:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah!

Actually, The Grey Ghost, as he was originally going to be called, was loose inspiration for my character, The White Ghost.
