Description
My admiration for =jwelliott 's surreal deviations made me want to do something in the style of Swiss dark surrealist HR Giger. This particular deviation is about violence and dehumanization, obviously.I had never done anything with an airbrush (real or virtual) before, and I very rarely draw or paint anything that dark and macabre, so I'm sure there are many aspects of this image that could be improved.
***Edited to make the black background really black.

Giger... that's the first word that came to mind when I saw this. If this was your first outing with the airbrush, I can't wait to see what else you've done. (I got this via fresvik's journal, BTW.)
Violence and dehumanization, eh? (In so many words...) What I was thinking of while looking at this -- with regards to your description -- was the long-debated issue of tools and other such inventions being morally neutral in and of themselves. However, the invention, in my opinion, is imbued with the will and needs of the inventor. Especially apparent with such inventions as weapons, whose uses, though varied, arguable, and abused, are quite pointedly determined from the moment of their idea's conception. What do you think?
Oh, and another thing: It'd probably help out the meaning of the piece - not to mention its visual strength - by mirroring the humanoid "crani-gun" so that they're aiming at each other. Just a thought. It'd make a nice two-page spread in a book...

Thank you for your suggestion, and thank you very much for sharing the thoughts that this deviation brought about. I don't think I've ever done anything else with the airbrush, to be honest.
When I was doing this, I didn't have any clear message in mind - I'd rather play with strong, symbolic content and let the different elements combine themselves in all kinds of different ways in the mind of the viewer. That being said, I think your interpretation is quite fascinating. Some people talk about weapons as if they were no different than any other tool. Sure, a shovel is just a tool - it's a digging tool. A gun is also a tool - it's a KILLING tool. Why some people want to put the emphasis on "tool" and ignore the "killing" part, I'll never understand.
Sure, a gun doesn't actually kill people by itself, thank God for small favors, but killing and hurting other people is its main purpose. Clearly, a civilization that feels it needs more weapons is willing to kill and hurt more and more people. All tools are an extension of the human hand, the hand is an extension of the mind, and the mind is an extension of our heart.

thats so cool, i thougt about giger right away when i saw it, before i read your text, not in a bad way, i know that gigers work are different so this is nice and original.
But one of my favorite giger paintings is the "Birthmachine", this is not the one you thought about i think but it still envolves a gun hehe, i like the revolving cylinders in the eyesockets, real smart and nice looking.
Great work!

Thank you!

Looks great! I really like the colour's you've used to create a very dark feel to it, and how you've made the trigger of the gun into the hinge of the jaw Thats a really nice effect
