Is the Joker really crazy? Or is he so totally sane, that everyone else is crazy?

The latest issue of Morrison's "Batman and Robin" says otherwise...

Haven't read it yet. Do you mean the Joker actually admits guilt or regret?

Can't say. Spoilers. But there IS a scene of bitter irony for the Clown Prince of Crime.

Just read it. Interesting to see how this plays out. Bitter irony for the Joker indeed.
I guess my favorite interpretation of the character has always been when he's just evil and unrepentant about it (even if he doesn't think of himself as evil). I've always like Morrison's "Super Sanity" theory on the Joker as well.
Of course, it always adds depth to hischaracter when you can see a bit of his human side, like in The Killing Joker or Going Sane.

Probably, kind of like in Dark Knight Returns where he was comatose and harmless until Batman was back in action.
Don't know if you read Going Sane, but Joker became a "normal" person when he thought he killed Batman. Whole new personality, or perhaps his old personality resurfacing. The Batman turned up alive and Joker was back.

Didn't know about that part. I just remember he was dating a girl, they were going to get married and then he discovered Batman was still alive and the normal personality disappeared.

And I did came across a fan comic where Batman disappeared and disasters hit Gotham and Joker was HELPING people.

I would love to read that one! There's been so many stories where there would be no Joker if there were no Batman. Batman is just so central to Joker's psyche. Even when the Joker was near omnipotent in Emperor Joker, he still had Bats on the brain!

Haha yes and since he seems to care about nothing except maybe...not caring about anything, he definitely would not have to say sorry. You did a great job on his expression, wow. I cannot figure out how all my friends can nail these expressions so well when all my characters just retain the same, spaced-out look.... I like the style of it too, very comic-like.

As always, thank you! People call the Joker an anarchist, but I tend to see him more as a nihilist. Sees value in nothing and wants to show that to the world. Not sorry for anything and cares for nothing, not even himself (in the best Joker stories, anyway. The Dark Knight did this best).
I don't see your characters' faces as spaced out, more of a classical look, really, and I will explain:
Ever look at old paintings or woodcuts, or even old photos where the people have no expression on their face? That has always bee disturbing to me because you can't read them. You look at old religious works and the faces usually seem calm and expressionless, even when there are really horrible things happening. I get to thinking what kind of hell is going on behind that serene face.
Believe me, anyone can portray madness by drawing a wigged-out face (like I've done here).
