Brooklyn, NYThe car on the left is an R-11, one of ten prototype new technology cars from 1949 intended for the Second Avenue Subway, a project that would become infamous for false-starts (though the latest effort looks like it will open a few stations within the next couple of years). Three BMT Standards from 1915-1919 are in the background.

Right, the former IRT lines have narrower cars and tighter clearances (they used the same standards as the elevated lines, while the BMT and IND used the same dimensions as conventional rail cars). Both divisions use the US standard gauge track.

It was first proposed in 1920, halted by the Great Depression and WWII, started construction in 1972, and halted by the city's financial crisis in the 1975. Phase I of the current project (72nd-96th st) started work in 2006 and is due to open December 2016 (assuming no further delays). Phases II, III, and IV are unfunded.
