This scene takes place in the first act of the movie, where Lady Laurel wakes Ian up in the middle of another dream of a mysterious girl on Arrakis to let him know that the Mother Superior wishes to see him in the library. She gives him a test to see how strong willed and minded he is, by having him place his hand in a box that will inflict unbearable pain on him while holding a poison needle to his neck to kill him should he remove his hand. In the end, he does end up passing the test and proving that there is a strong possibility that Ian is indeed the Kwisatz Haderach, a messiah-like figure with the gift of clairvoyance
