The evolution of the LAMA gear

Hiya it's been a while since I've last posted something in terms of colored work and I'm popping out of hiding for a bit to show off my 550th color commission with is appropriate as Pokemon Legends Arceus comes out soon and I wanted to celebrate in some way. Granted as of posting this a bit earlier as the game is releasing a few more days away as usually I just post something the day before and there's a reason for that...a reason you'll find out tomorrow

Back to the picture, it's a milestone picture so we got another LAMA picture but with a twist this time...and it's time. We are covering two eras in one picture with two different dives split off between the past and present as two characters doing a scuba dive with two different version of LAMA gear. One of which is a character you haven't seen wearing LAMA gear in almost 5 years, Dawn from Diamond and Pearl on the left side of the picture along with her Pokemon Partner Piplup. And on the right we have (Dawn's possible ancestor but as of now it isn't confirmed yet) the female protagonist of the newest game, Pokemon Legends Arceus along with her partner Oshawott, Akari.

Alright, time for the story. One day, at Sunyshore City, Dawn wanted to spend some time with Piplup for being a great partner and she thought going scuba diving would be a great idea. So after renting the equipment (which compared to her last dive the LAMA gear this time the gear was updated a bit) and after getting the gear on and testing to see if everything works, Dawn and Piplup dive underwater. It was going to to be a casual dive and not catching Pokemon, just Dawn and Piplup having fun under the sea. However during their dive, Dawn and Piplup found something on the ocean floor that caught their attention. From the looks of it, it seems that it's remnants of someone scuba diving here as some equipment remained on the Ocean Floor for an unknown time. At least after looking around for, they didn't see any remains of the diver themselves so whoever was diving here managed to get away at least. Within the equipment, something caught Dawn's eye and it's a Wooden Pokeball from the Hisui era. Dawn is impressed as she has seen the design from history class but this is the first time she sees the actual Pokeball in person and is intrigued by it. Piplup is a little bit confust as it seems that Piplup wasn't brushed up on it's history so doesn't know why that Pokeball looks different from the rest. But another question popped into Piplup's mind...why and how are all of this equipment is here?

*A Long Time Ago*

During the Hisui Era, the Galaxy Expedition Team has started to create the first Pokedex as they tried to record all of the Pokemon in the Hisui region and progress is going great thanks to the new recruits that they got. Now the next area that the team tries to focus on is the beach and ocean area to record their findings. While they were able to find some Pokemon, one issue remains is the Pokemon that live under the water. Sure they can fish but they can't exactly tell what's exactly underwater. So it's something for the team to figure out and Professor Laventon and the R&D must figure out a way for humans to breath underwater like Water Pokemon with some trail and error in the process. However while researching different Pokemon from other lands for inspiration, Profession Laventon came across details of a bug Pokemon that was able to breath underwater thanks to a bubble that surround the head and that gave him an idea. After sometime later, they came up with a prototype of a diving helmet that would let anyone go underwater with a 360 degree view which would be handy spotting underwater Pokemon. Even having weights in some areas to help the wearer to sink underwater but not too much allowing them to swim some distance. Now it's time for the testing phase to see how the helmet works. There are some issues that they haven't haven't implemented as they don't know how to compress air yet to a tank so there would have to be an air pump that would bring the air to the diver. So when thinking of proper candidates of who would test out the gear, Akari seems to be the best choice seeing how she has her partner, Oshawott. When Kamada and Cyllene gave Akari the assignment, she accepts. So Akari goes to the ocean close to the beach on a boat. With some help, Akari was fully geared up and with the air pump turned on, Akari jumps off the boat and sinks to the bottom with her Oshawott on her side. Reaching the bottom, Akari was aw struck at the scenery as she might be the first person to walk and breath underwater. But there was no time to admire, that comes later as she has a job to do as she pulls out her pokeball with a determine look as the quest to record the underwater Pokemon begins!...And based on the left side of the picture, I guess Akari must of came across a mean Pokemon and retreated to the surface but manages to catch it after throwing a bunch of rocks at it

OH BOY I love the idea of the picture and how well it is fully executed. While the idea of past and present being shown at the same time isn't new as I've seen a couple pictures of it a while ago, this was my first coloring of it. It's just that I do like how both pictures are connected in some way, mainly the wooden Pokeball which is the key detail that both of the main characters focus on. Also it's a fantastic way to show off both versions of the LAMA gear as one features the same simple LAMA design that you seen on my Gallery for almost 10 years as well as the real life version of the LAMA gear. A cute idea to show the evolution of the gear with the simple gear with the past and the detailed gear for the present. Very fitting all things considered. And finally...it's Dawn, she's basically my favorite Pokemon character in terms of design (for characteristics she' up there in terms of favorite female) and the fact that there's technically two of them with Akari being a (possible) ancestor of Dawn so the cuteness has been doubled ^^

As for coloring, shockingly nothing too much to talk about in terms of background and gear. What is interesting however is the characters in how I colored them. Starting with Dawn she recently appeared (and still appearing) in the Pokemon Journey's Anime so now we get anime Dawn in GLORIOUS HD! Which means I have a new color reference for her and I used those colors for her wetsuit, gear and character so there are some minor differences from the previous colored work featuring Dawn. Akari was a different story as of writing as she hasn't appeared in anything anime related which I tend to use the anime as the main resource for colors and using the game are varies from time to time in terms of clean colors. So I did the next best thing, fan art. I tried to find some fan art that is as close to the anime artstyle as they can and I found a couple and mixed and match a bit to see what works best until I got something that fits her the best while being different from Dawn. Done a pretty good job on Akari as a whole thanks to her simple design to make her equipment look vintage like and it fits ^^

But what I do have more to talk about is the line art, or at the very least, the refining part. Once again I can't stress how Shoxxe is a great artist but I want to present the full picture as best as I can and there were some parts that can be improved upon. So like the previous LAMA picture, I asked my good friend Evgnm for some help and sure enough he did a great job refining some details and even making it so that the bubble helmet fits properly for me to apply the effect I use. But I also refine some areas as well, mainly some parts of the backgrounds. It wasn't easy and it may not look 100% right but I tried my best.

And that's really it, again very happy I can color this and I love the overall result of it, just in time for Pokemon Legends Arceus...again kind of, you'll see why tomorrow
