Description This was a request from Kammy . I hope you like it! ^_^

It took approximatly 2 hours but that ok because I really enjoyed making it. Its a huge file so if you have a slow computer I suggest you go take a nap while waiting for it to load.

Remember the 3 basic rules:
Highlights
Midtones
Shadows

Maybe I'll make another tutorial in the future but I'm no expert at anything so perhaps not. Who knows?
^_^

Enjoy!

Click here to see the finished picture.

Note: I'm from England so we spell the word colour, not color like americans. So theres no need to tell me I can't spell. Ok? Just thought I'de point that out before anyone mentions it.

Edit: I just read it through and realized I've made 3 or 4 spelling mistakes. Please don't torture me about this. I swear it's still understandable.

Thank you very much for making this tutorial!
I haven't a tablet and I'm awkward at paintiong with mouse, so I have to use crayons (I like them much more, so this isn't a problem) and your tutorial was very helpful! Thank you (:

Thank you, this is very helpful, Im going to save money to look for a set to buy. Now I regret giving my set away when I wasn't interested in colouring

Aww, don't think of it like that. You did something nice for somebody else.
And now you have an excuse to splash and buy yourself a shiny new set!
If you can afford it Faber Castel are very good. My aunt bought me a set over holidays, I couldnt possible get them myself ^^".

Good luck!

I guess I should be happy about it since that person is my now 5 years old sister who is good at colouring for her age( I get so proud of her). If I can't afford it I will buy a different one and tell my mum get it for me for christmas. Thx

What brand of pencils are those?

the-sinister In reply to LunasCharm [2010-07-08 08:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Hiya, I searched all over the tin box and all I can find is a name in the small print saying "Aldi". As far as I know Aldi isn't a retailer of art supplies and someone gave these to me as a gift years ago so I'm not sure how much luck you'll have finding them.

LunasCharm In reply to the-sinister [2010-07-08 23:25:13 +0000 UTC]

Ok, thanks for looking!
when you were holding them up they kind of had the shape of crayola pencil crayons, but I knew they weren't that... one of the art stores here sells kind of different things so they might have something like it.
Thanks!

Thanks so much for this tutorial and you're funny to. I was just wondering what kind of strokes you used to color the artwork.

*Runs of wondering where her pencils went*

the-sinister In reply to nicholastse [2010-01-25 23:22:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very very much. I'm no professional but I'm happy if it helped you in any way at all. ^_^

About skin, there are a lot of ways to do it but if you mean manga skin specifically then it's very easy. Manga skin (specially the ones in anime) always in 2 or 3 tones. The basic flat tone, the shadows and the highlights.
It's very difficult to explain withut pictures to demonstrate. I think the best way of learning is by maybe taking screenshots of your favourite anime and analysing things like where the shadows go, direction of light sources, highlights, etc.
It's no good getting another persons work as reference because people nearly always pick the prettiest/most beautiful ones and when their own work doesnt turn out as spectacular (simple due to lack of practise!) they feel disheartened and give up.

But don't give up! I'm sure you can learn how to colour skin if you just practise. If you need any help just ask me, I'd be happy to. ^_^

You're very very wlcome. I'm happy to help, you didnt disturb me at all, don't worry about it.
Gosh! you are so sweet, I just wanna huggle you!

Now, for the picture you drew (which is brilliant btw ), first of all start by finding a good reference. Something relevant to you will help greatly.
I just did a wuick search and found this picture which I thought showed light and shadow very well:
[link]

Analyse the picture. Ask yourself what tones are used? where are the darker places, where are the lighter places? where have the colours changed tone/become more red or green or blue etc etc etc

Once you've answered them try to apply the same principles to your drawing. ^_^

the-sinister In reply to nicholastse [2010-02-02 21:36:18 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, I won't be disappointed. It's a lot more important to me that your practise and improve. Thats the only way to improve, right?
If you need any pointers for improvement you can always ask me. One of my strong points in art is analysing strengths and weaknesses of a piece of work... ah! don't think I'm bragging or anything. ^^"

Practise practise practise and you'll surpass me in no time. I'm an amateur. I don't think I even coloured anything with pencils after I made this. (watercolours covers blank areas faster than pencil. I'm so lazy. ^^")

Nice tutorial! Favourited it, but I was wondering which program it can be opened in? Because my internet connection is really slow, so I saved it just so I don't need to download it every time. But I couldn't open it with Photoshop

the-sinister In reply to Mangavampiria [2008-10-14 17:48:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks you so much!

Actually I made the tut in MS Paint. not photoshop. ^^"

Try opening it in Paint and if that doesnt work the MS image viewer should be alright.

And if that doesnt work then theres prolly something wrong with my DA. ^^"

I was wondering what brand of pencil crayons do you use? I plan on buying new pencil crayons, but I use Crayola. and I want to get a really good brand, is yours sold in Canada?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

the-sinister In reply to 01Lalami [2008-08-15 18:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Actually I got mine a couple of years ago as a gift from my moms friend. I don't even remember her anymore. XD
But anyway hold on a sec. I'll go have a look at the tin and see what brand it is. ^^ brb.
......
Right, looking the tin I can tell you....nothing. XD
Honestly theres nothing on this tin! It just says "36 coloured pencils" in 4 different languages and thats it.
But no worries! I mean its not like you have to buy the exact same pencils as mine. The way to spot some good crayons is to test the lead. If its soft and the colour comes off onto the page quite easily then its good quality. If the lead is hard and you have put your whole weight behind it just to get a bit of colour then dont buy it.
Hope that helps. ^^
