I tried that too the top half of the frame was washed out but the bottom was in the shadow of the lens

Ah, the amazing problem of vertical macro's with flash using a SLR. I have the same thing, and don't worry, I just love the effect brought on the picture by the ISO 3200, it's lovely. Also the famous focus width of Nikon did it again!
