Why did you have to trash the laptop with a gun and do you remember what were the hardware specifications for it?

The-Travellers-Tale In reply to ppgrainbow [2010-01-07 11:40:19 +0000 UTC]
It was totally dead, I wouldnt have done it to a working laptop, and all useable parts were removed first, and it was a metal bar not a gun
1.6 ghz intel celeron - 10gb HDD - 128 mb ram low spec

Yikes! That's no good.
Did you know how did the laptop die like this and were there any replacement parts for that laptop available?

Motherboard blew, literaly, burnt a hole in it. we took all the components out for spares, we have a few of these laptops but not many there all dying fast

Yikes! The motherboard blew out? I suspect that the motherboard got too old didn't it? If so, that was awful.
And since there were no replacement parts for the motherboard available, the laptop had to be destroyed as a last resort, didn't it?
I suspect that newer laptops weren't built to last more than several years.

The-Travellers-Tale In reply to ppgrainbow [2010-01-07 12:18:34 +0000 UTC]
Yeah there quite a few years old now, and laptops get abused in schools we couldnt but a motherboard but we have spare drives, batteries and cpu for other machines.
I decided to destroy it not to smash it, but to take pictures, it had to suffer for my art
Have you seen what happened next? [link]

Another reason why you may have destroyed the laptop is that you might not have the money to get the motherboard replaced.
If there are no replacement parts for the motherboard, the laptop is no good.

you cant buy the motherboards anymore and its all no good

I knew it. There are no replacement motherboards available.
If the motherboard on either this PC or the GRiD Convertible 486 blows out, I'm toast.
Have a look at this video of daanberg taking apart a 11-year old laptop that could not be repaired: [link]
Compaq was acquired by HP in around 2001-2002 and HP has policies to cease support and production for laptops that are between 1 to 4 years old.

Shame....
Wow 486! thats an old machine supprised it runs DA ok.
That vid was cool, I thought modern laptops had a lot of screws, and how thick was it
Shanme there cutting support, people need to use computers longer and not throw them away as often

386, 486 and even early Pentium-based PCs cannot use the internet at all, because of lack of memory. The 486SL-based GRiD 2270 only has 4 MB of memory and it can only go to 12 MB. It's not internet capable at all even though it is Windows 95 or Windows 95 OSR1 capable and it only has about 48.7 MB of disk space remaining out of a 123 MB capacity. With that little disk space, I don't think it is Windows 95 capable at all.
I'm hoping to get a bigger hard drive, get the CMOS battery replaced and fix the broken right henge.

The-Travellers-Tale In reply to ppgrainbow [2010-01-14 19:41:26 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I didnt think they would be able to, the slowest i've been on the internet with was a 66mhz pentium. dos 6.22, its the future I really cant believe that thing is still running, I have a 386 laptop but it died last year
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ppgrainbow In reply to The-Travellers-Tale [2010-01-14 21:23:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeah and it's unclear if the pentop will be at least retrofitted with a new CMOS battery.
The slowest PC that I used the internet was a 66MHz 486DX2 PC with a 1.08 GB SCSI hard drive and only 16 MB of memory with Windows 95 retail installed. I was on a dial-up modem at the time.
I eventually upgraded to Windows 98 and unfortunately, it wasn't too capable of handling 16 MB of memory and a second hard drive.
How did your 386-based laptop die on your last year?

I love that laptop!
Someone at work brought it in, turned had a log on screen but he couldnt remember the password, a few fails and restart, then on time it restarted and the screen just stayed blank white, the screen was dodgy to start with

ppgrainbow In reply to The-Travellers-Tale [2010-01-14 22:14:56 +0000 UTC]
Actually the PC that I used from December 1993 to August 1998 was a full tower desktop PC, not a laptop.
He couldn't remember the password to the CMOS setup. Also, why did the LCD display stayed blank white and that it was dodgy to start with?

The-Travellers-Tale In reply to ppgrainbow [2010-01-14 22:20:41 +0000 UTC]
no it wasnt the CMOS set up it had an OS i didnt recognise, just a simple text log on.
The screen flickered like there was a loose connection, Fore some reason I cant remember why I havent opened it up yet? when we first got it, it took priority over a failed server scsi drive thats how i prioritise

Eep! That's awful!
My notebook PC died literally, because, I believe that the display won't come on and the GPU apparently blew out.
The graphics adapter mentioned is the NVIDIA 8400M G and NVIDIA has came under fire recently over its faulty GPU chips.
I'll eventually remain online for the next three hours and then I'm going to bed.

Yep. Also known as the on-board video graphics card. Many hardware vendors only sell replacements for up to one year and that's it.

it never gets to cold at school here, but it sure does feel like it, for us anyway.
its usually, in the middle of winter, about 15, and thats freezing for us.
yeah, of course we do! although sometimes it breaks so we have no aircon, that sucks.
