Description I can't for the life of me understand why the lesson doesn't advise you to blend the blue of the background into the shading of the flower and stem. Looking at the reference photo, it seemed to be the obvious choice of action.

Woah this is amazing!

Also I think while Art Academy teaches basic techniques to get the job done, I think they allow enough breathing space that artists can experiment and put their own personal spin on the tutorial lessons, I think I tried similar, but my tulip is nowhere near as nice as this. 

I think that's a positive really, showing that even the basic lessons are worth going back to and trying again when you understand tips and tricks of your own a little better.

I agree. Art Academy does offer a thoroughly enjoyable level of freedom while still being instructive enough to teach a seasoned artist like myself a thing or two.
