Description Gimli in the scene: "The Battle of the Hornburg" in The two Towers.

Ten thousand Uruk Hai march on the sparsely manned fortress of Helm's Deep. The thunder of their footsteps echoing throughout the darkened valley strikes fear into the hearts of the Rohirrim. The women and children in the caves tremble at the approach of their impending doom. Gimli's greatest troubles are being too short to see over the wall and the sarcastic Elf making fun of him for it.

I do like this scene. Though, admittedly, I chose it more for the technical challenge than for any profound emotional quality or significance to the story. It certainly did deliver. And here I must try very hard not to gush profusely about how happy I am with this piece, and simply let it speak for itself. Suffice to say it is tied with "Stormcrow" for the position of "Favorite" (I suspect the beard to be a strong factor).

*Wipes brow* Whew, that was fun. Now let's see if I can get the other two done before I die of old age.

Fantastic job! It doesn't look digital on first glance, quite a traditional media feel about it. You've done great capturing the light and textures, the beard is indeed well done.

Well, I'd say it was an even balance between the excessive use of a grid and an almost fanatical attention to detail. The line work alone took me four days to get right.

Wow, I have never used a grid before. I commend you for your dedication. Your results reflect it.

Thank you! Grid work was actually one of the first things I learned in art school.

It looks really good. Gimli suddenly looks like he has character and feelings for more than just making the audience laugh.

I may not be entirely happy with certain aspects of the LOTR films. But I do love them in general.

Thank you very much!
I suppose I've never considered that Gimli might be misrepresented in the films. Now that I think on it though, the films don't really show much depth to his character. That is the risk with movie adaptations of books: with hundreds or even thousands of people working on the same project, some things are bound to be lost in translation. Though some (LOTR) certainly come closer to the mark than others (An Unexpected Journey).

Thank you very much! As for the order of the portraits: they are arranged alphabetically by name of character with every other one being a hobbit (who are also arranged alphabetically). So by that pattern, Sam will be next, and then finally Legolas.

I don't have any plans for them at the moment, but I would like to do a portrait of Saruman eventually.
