Nice shot, definitely bigger than the container ship I was on. I best guess is she carries 7,000 teu (Twenty foot equivalent units). Yes she is carrying empty containers and she isn't fully loaded. I saw your comment earlier, they do roll a bit in a storm. I was off the west coast of India in a heavy swell. The ship rolled and 15 degrees at most so it was like walking and standing around being tipsy all the time plus sleeping can have it's challenges. I slept on the sofa, which was laid along the beam direction to the ship so I didn't fall off. Other than that it's fun rolling in a storm, for most of the time.

Thanks! Trying to sleep with a 15 degree roll sounds crazy.

I'm a writer--my first novel Seaborn (Juno Books) was out in 2008. I typically write science fiction and fantasy, but my next two books are near-future SF or possibly tech thrillers depending on how the publisher wants to pitch them. I'm halfway through one about salvage operations off the coast of Cuba. Would you mind if I sent you a question or two about ships and life at sea? (It may not be for a month or two, but I know I'll have questions when I start going through the first draft).

Chris

Sure not a problem. However I will be finishing at the academy for this year and will be heading back to sea sometime in August and I won't have internet on board. But I'll happy to help wherever I can. I too dabble in writing myself. It may only be fanfiction but it's a start.

Thanks! I am trying to get the first draft complete in July. I'll try to get some questions to you before you head out. What kind of fanfic do you write? I saw you're reading Lee Child on your profile. Jack Reacher fanfiction...that would be cool.

Sadly I didn't do one with Reacher, but that sounds like a good idea, my original character and Reacher might work well together. I only started to read books at all on ship because it was either get drunk or play ping pong.

It may not be obvious, but quietly I am a big Transformers fan, so I did a fanfic on the latest TV series which is subtlety aimed at people my age and those who are younger at the same time. But after two fanfic's nearly a 100,000 words long and with the character I created myself, I'm thinking about going completely original. I should say Lee Child was a massive source of inspiration.

Cool! Yeah, keep going. 100,000 words is a full novel, and getting the story on paper or typed in is most of the work. I've been in writing groups and workshops with plenty of writers who have great ideas. They just didn't have the drive to do the actual writing.

Great shot!! Ship is probably running with empty container imo, thats why he is so high above load line.

Thanks! I shot this ship coming into Port of Seattle, Washington. You're right, has to be empty.

Before Archimedes, it would have sunk, but then he changed everything.
