So I haven't made a piece for myself in a long time. Technichally, this piece tested every skill I've picked up in this business. Emotionally, it was like picking through everything I needed to say and really just couldn't find the words for. Having finished it (sort of) I just feel...empty. And emo. But that notwithstanding...

The horse started out with heavy western gear covering about two thirds of its body. Once I removed the bridles, saddle gear and rider, I had to paint in his entire midsection by hand. His mane was also on the other side, so I went through and repainted it to hang on this side. The ghost effect took a little longer here, largely because I had to really get it perfect because that's where the focus needs to be. As for the background, I took the ground and found nice broody green clouds. Originally it was supposed to be night, but I went for a washed out almost sickly look instead. It's more of a dreamscape than anything else anyway. The bones I largely drew in, using references from sxc and google. There were some base bones I used from something else, and a photomanip I relied on for help, but I can't remember who did it originally. The dust was all handpainted too. The original canvas size for this is RIDICULOUSLY large. I hope it uploaded appropriately.

The piece is about not letting go. It was originally going to be a piece for a friend's contest about a horse who loved life so much he couldn't let it go, but it turned into more of a mirror of me than anything else. I feel like I'm stuck between one place and the next, hanging on to what I had and not understanding what could come next, not being allowed to reach through the veil for whatever I've earned. So you're left in nothingness, in limbo, looking back because that's all you have. [/emo]
