The finale was bitter sweet, mainly because I was such a fan of Starlight the villain. Though I must say I teared up when I saw the results of Rainbow Dash not getting the sonic rainboom. That was probably the saddest moments in cartoon history.

I actually liked Season 3's finale, even though it's the weakest season of the show and I started losing interest in the show in the middle of that season.  The season finale was very heartwarming I thought, as it showed to how far Twilight has come as a character.

Honestly, just Starlight Glimmer's character is the most horrible thing from season 5.  Everything about her is just bad writing from her OP status -her ability to remove cutie marks AND FINISH AN IMPOSSIBLE TIME TRAVEL SPELL are high levels of bullshit power- to her completely selfish and petty personality to her character design that just screams "WE WANT TO MAKE A FOIL TO TWILIGHT!" even though they already had TWO that they tossed to the side.

Bad character design is bad character design but what really broke it for me was the fact that Starlight's "tragic backstory" is one big fat Freudian Excuse that really only amounted to "I had one friend who got their cutie mark before me, so I decided to hate everyone." and due to the rules of "this is a kid's show" Twilight understands and forgives her IMMEDIATELY and TAKES HER INTO HER INNER CIRCLE, even though this is the SAME CHARACTER that brainwashed an entire town and tried to destroy the oddly fragile timeline for little more than petty reasons.  WHAT THE HELL?  She doesn't even TRY to discuss this with the other three Princesses or her friends, she just decides on her own "Welp, she isn't all THAT BAD so let's just make her a main character!"

I get that it's for kids, that it's supposed to be for kids, that it's supposed to sell merchandise so they want to introduce as many characters as they can, and given that I started losing interest in the show by the middle of season three, I figured it was time for me to stop watching it.

I still like the characters though, and the fandom isn't too bad.  I've seen a lot of great stuff come from it, sometimes better than the show in my opinion.  I stick to my fan theory of Glimmer rather than what the Season 5 finale came up with so she'd at least be tolerable for me.

I apologize if I seem hostile in any way, and that this response is quite long.  I really do like this fantastic fanart, I'll admit that the multiple alternative timelines were pretty much the most amazing part of Season 5.  I just wish the story and characterization of the villain were better, as the writing is what made me a fan of the show in the first place.

I also enjoyed the Season 3 finale. It was Twilight's rite of passage. But I understand a lot of people didn't because of the whole Alicorn thing.

In regards to TS making a decision without any input from her friends or the princesses. Twilight's jurisdiction is Ponyville and friendship in general. I think Twilight gets to make that call. Afterall, what is Candy, Celestia, and Luna going to do? Fire her? Also, it was mentioned in Starlight's episode that she was only able to steal cutie marks with a special scepter/staff. Your statement about"FINISH AN IMPOSSIBLE TIME TRAVEL SPELL" is unprecedented.  Usually, in all stories, we are not shown the ceiling of power levels of abilities until later seasons. It fails to build drama if you are shown the height of capability if you aren't even explained the rules of engagement yet. If they shown you Dio's power in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure immediately or Voldermort's secret to immortality without any suspense or build up, the stakes would be absurdly low by the climax. Or if they have shown what fusion was in Steven Universe before even understanding the power level of a gem, that would then portray that a gem is never strong in the first place and fusions were the norm.

And despite how terribly written Starlight's tragic back story is, it isn't far from the truth of people. In psychology, the Consistency Principle, the way we view our minds, we must always view ourselves in the same way, regardless of what is actually fact. Since Adolf Hitler is often brought up as a meme for her, let's go ahead and continue without that logic of thinking. To be honest, I'm lazy to look up the sources, so you have to take my word for it or do your own research, but in biographies, it has been recorded that Adolf has personal reasons for his religious outlook and targeting (individuals of that religious group wronged him during college). Same thing with Starlight. Due to the Consistency Principle, both parties view their injustice as a correlation with one object and not an isolated incident to that individual that wronged them or event that wronged them.

Also: "Most importantly, the Freudian Excuse  does not involve the character growing or changing; it explains why they haven't changed, and in fact, often serves as a signal that they cannot and never will." But she clearly changes. That excerpt was from tvtropes.com, so not sure if they definition is entirely accurate. I've never heard the trope before until this discussion, so my apologies if I get it twisted.

And lastly, the other two foils to Twilight. Sunset is in Equestria Girls, and if you've seen Rainbow Rocks and Legend of Everfree, you can clearly see that she wasn't tossed out. And Trixie was more of a rival than an arch-nemesis.

Don't worry about the length of posts. I certainly don't~ Also, nothing hostile about an argument/conversation. And even if it was, it's not like we can hurt each other through the internet.

You do know the staff wasn't exactly what was removing the cutie marks, right?  They showed in the second part of the season 5 opener that she really did use her own spell to remove them and not the staff at all.

As for that unprecedented thing,  I'll give you that, but I was under the impression that Twilight had tried and failed to finish it herself (since she said it was never finished before, and she tends to challenge such notions) and, you know, she's supposed to be more or less the most powerful magic-user or whatever due to her special talent being magic itself.  She should know whether or not it could be done.

Even with the Consistency Principle, it doesn't really make sense as to why she'd want to go out of her way to really harm anyone.  If her worldview was more "friendships hurt you" than "special talents are evil" then wouldn't it make more sense for her to just shut herself from the world?  What made her decide to create what amounts to a cult?  What was her end goal?  Someone was going to notice ponies going missing and joining a cult where they give up on their special talents, it just happened to be Twilight and company who found out first.

Honestly, I wish the staff was the thing removing the marks and that Starlight herself was a victim of its power.  But I guess we do need a vague villain-type since all the good ones turned a new leaf.

Season 6 started more or less showing Starlight refusing (albeit at first) to admit to her faults, and that's kinda where I gave up on her as a character.  Admitting fault is the first step of atonement, which is supposed to be her whole thing.

I don't count the movies as canon.  I'm not particularly fond of them either, less said the better.  Sunset at least HAS a good backstory...though they do little to nothing with it, and it's just a can of worms of not making sense.

It pissed me off how Twilight immediately got suspicious of Trixie, thinking she would be a bad influence on Starlight.  The pony who was humiliated and lost her livelihood as a performer so in desperation she bought a forbidden item that made her go mad with power and gave a half-hearted passive-aggressive apology then left Twilight alone would be a bad influence on the incredibly selfish pony who brainwashed an entire town full of ponies and THEN tried to tear apart the fabric of the timeline in an attempt of petty revenge...yeah Trixie is OBVIOUSLY going to be the bad influence.  Screw Season 6.

theairevolution In reply to Mr-Dusk14 [2017-01-16 14:53:13 +0000 UTC]

She used her own spell, but Twilight does recognize the staff as a powerful magical artifact. One of nine i believe.

No where did it state that Twilight is the most powerful magic user. Hell, did you see Party Favor? He is able to make balloon bridges. Twilight is the magic of friendship, and probably stronger of the Four Sisters, but the world at no point in time has stated that she is the MOST powerful. Starswirl is actually mentioned to still be more powerful than Twilight in terms of raw magic power, but lacks friendship.

No, you're missing the point of the consistency principle. She didn't think she was hurting ponies. She thought she was helping them. Same thing with Adolph. Do you think people do things intentionally to be evil? Is that your view of a person? Everyone has an inert reason why they're doing things, good or bad. Just look at Diamond Tiara. She was a complete jerk for the longest time, and it is explained why because of her mother.  I'm glad you've never been through a rough time in your life, but for people who have rough times in life, I feel we've all thought of doing questionable moral things for our own benefit. Same thing with DT and Starlight. Starlight created this "cult" so she wasn't alone anymore and that she was in power. Since it felt like her childhood, she was never in control or power since she separated from Sunburst.

Of course she needed to be magically adept, or else that staff would be way too dangerous otherwise to even be locked away in a museum case.

It wasn't that Starlight refused to admit her guilt. It's that she didn't want to face it or tell her friend about. You ever do something you were ashamed of? Even though you knew it was wrong by society standards, you still did it? Because the mind is a selfish place and sometimes it wants to put its wants over its needs. And then afterwards you had to admit your mistake? You remember reading stories about people not wanting to do this on terms of pride? Yeah. That's what is happening here.

It doesn't matter if you count the movies as canon. It matters if the show counts them as canon. And Twilight has written in the communication journal for Sunset once in the show before. Sunset is going through a similar time as Starlight.

And lastly, Twilight got suspicious of Trixie because we all are susceptible to our own prejudices. Do you think your viewpoints of fighting a war are different before becoming a soldier and then after becoming a soldier? How about your viewpoint of a doctor before becoming a doctor and then becoming one? Or how about your viewpoint of being a Princess of Friendship before becoming a Princess of Friendship? Twilight met Trixie on episode 4 of season 1. Alot of stuff has happened between then and now. You can never take back a first impression. And Twilight didn't know what friendship really was at that point. She used previous knowledge of Trixie, Discord, and Sunset to realized that sometimes people can change if someone cares enough.

I thought her lines were that the staff wasn't part of the nine, and then we never heard about them again.

Okay then.

She looked more like she wanted to control them than help them to me.

I've been through hardship, don't you dare suggest I haven't when you don't know me personally.

theairevolution In reply to Mr-Dusk14 [2017-01-18 23:48:10 +0000 UTC]

Not everything is black and white. She wants to control them. But she also wants to help them which in turn helps herself. Have you ever heard the theory that no one in the world is selfless? That everyone just does things for own self justification and worth? I feel this is the case with Starlight.

If you've been through hardship, as I know every human has, then is it too hard to understand that someone does things that they're ashamed of from time to time?
